Pearl arrived at the DSC in Aug 2013, following an SPCA investigation into neglect. Her overgrown hooves made every step difficult and painful. With dedicated farrier care she was able to get back on the road to recovery. Today, Pearl is a happy reminder of the difference a safe home can make.

Dunn has moved into the paddock with Oliver and Duke, and the introductions went beautifully. It means Duke won't have to spend the night on his own during the summer. Duke enjoys staying outside overnight, while Oliver prefers the coziness of his stall, so now everyone has what they need!

Happy 12th Birthday, Flint! Today we're celebrating one of the Sanctuary's most spirited residents. Born right here at the DSC, Flint arrived after his mom, Diamond, was rescued while already pregnant. We don't breed donkeys at the Sanctuary, so Flint's birth was a special day.

No two days are exactly alike at the DSC! The day begins early for our Animal Care team and the volunteers who come to help. You'll find donkeys out for a stroll on the track, or enjoying the shade in a shelter (like Oliver and Dunn). What's your favourite thing to see on a visit to the DSC?

Happy 4th Birthday, Pekoe! It's hard to believe that the tiny foal who surprised us with a middle-of-the-night arrival is already four years old! Pekoe was born at the DSC on July 7, 2022, just a few months after his mom, Chai, was rescued.

Their owner had done everything possible for Petey and Julius but ongoing challenges with paddock conditions made it difficult to get ahead of the donkeys' white line disease. So, they made the decision to have them come to the DSC, where they can receive the specialized hoof care they need.

Meet Alfie and Arlo! At just 3½ years old, Alfie and Arlo recently arrived from a farm after their owner made the decision to rehome them due to an upcoming move. While saying goodbye was not easy, ensuring they would continue to receive excellent care was the top priority.

Ted arrived at the DSC in 2018, looking for a fresh start. He had been living on a farm where he struggled to fit in with the other mules and developed behaviours that made him difficult to handle. His owner wanted the best for him and entrusted us with giving Ted the patient training he deserved.

Happy Birthday, Opal! Born in 2016, Opal came to the DSC in 2020 with her best friend, Pebbles, after their owners sold their farm. Join us in wishing this feisty little donkey a very happy birthday and many more years of adventures with her friends at the DSC!

Carling is a sweet mini donkey who joined the DSC in 2017. He has some ongoing health challenges. He had a laminitic flare-up over the Xmas holidays and is currently being treated for another flare-up. Many of you have a soft spot for Carling, and we're happy to report that he continues to shine!

We are sad to share the passing of BamBam, one of the DSC's senior residents. He came to the DSC in the summer of 2025. Although he was with us for a relatively short time, he had a gentle presence in the herd that will be missed. We are glad that we could be there for him when he needed us most.

Welcome home, Duggie! A mini gelding, who prior to his recent arrival at the DSC, shared a home with a pony mare who was unexpectedly pregnant. As the mare's due date approached, his owners became concerned about how Duggie might react to the new arrival, so he came to the DSC. Settling in well!

Thank you to Wild Birds Unlimited (Kitchener) for supporting the DSC. WBU held a silent auction in their store, with proceeds benefiting the DSC. The DSC is home to not only donkeys but also many wild birds, Our forests, fields and wetlands provide important habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.

Phoenix recently had a big milestone at the DSC with her very first dental appointment! She handled it like a pro and her teeth were only mildly sharp! Born in the wild in 2018 and taken by the Bureau of Land Management in 2023 (you can see her freeze brand in this pic). She came to us in 2024.

Some mornings are made for naps! Ricky and Misty were recently spotted enjoying a peaceful morning snooze together. Moments like these that remind us how important safety, comfort, and compassionate care are for donkeys in need.

Luke has discovered a very particular delicacy and it’s growing just beyond the fence! Here he is happily nibbling away at fresh weeds like they’re the finest treats on the menu. If Luke has anything to say about it, he will always find the “good greens,” fence or no fence.

We’re happy to report that Kingston was a great patient for his dental appointment. Thanks to lots of practice sessions, he’s become a pro at walking himself right into the stocks. He also had some excellent emotional support from Terra, who stayed nearby to help cheer him on through the process.
