Inside Morgan Stanley's private bank for the ultrawealthy over the past year, an employee in the mortgage-lending department tried to question how a client kept applying for new home loans claiming he would be living in the residences.
The client had already received several owner-occupied loans in just a few years, and the banker was objecting to a new one, people familiar with the matter said. Those mortgages often come with lower interest rates and require smaller down payments for the borrower than second homes or investment properties would, and seeking the wrong type of loan can be considered fraud.
"This is getting ridiculous," the banker said.
His mortgage colleagues told him to drop his concerns, the people said. They didn't want to deal with pushback from a financial adviser who managed the client's wealth assets.

For one, researchers are finding that many of these investments are simply. not paying off, leaving leadership to hold the bag. An oft-cited MIT report from last year found that a staggering 95 percent of Al pilot programs at companies are failing and delivering little to no measurable impact on protits.
Then there are the soaring costs of actually replacing human staffers with Al, with employers racking up enormous Al coding usage fees and leading some to wonder whether employing workers was actually cheaper.
In short, the line of thinking that Al will eventually replace workers and bring down costs is being seriously challenged by reality

Ahhhh congrats!!! I am now very team harness+backpack. I think backpacks are easier on the body than traditional carriers & smaller than a stroller, but if you let them hang out, it’s a core/shoulder workout. The cats nap in it all the time, and it’s become their go-to safe place when we’ve moved.

Did an LLM do this “logic”? All of this is extremely consistent with the “more Ai, more senior, no entry level” pattern in this field (in-office or not!!), and comparing employment rates with nursing?!?

The study, by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, compared occupations that can be done remotely — such as software development — with those that are done in person, such as nursing. The study finds that the unemployment rate among young college graduates in
"remotable" jobs rose by about 1 percentage point from 2017-2019 to 2022-2024.

Yet for older workers in those fields - those aged 29 and over - the jobless rate declined slightly, leading to a notably higher unemployment rate for younger college graduates in remotable occupations compared with older workers.
Yet in non-remotable jobs, there has been little gap in the unemployment rates between older and younger college grads, the study finds. A similar pattern exists for those without college degrees, the New York Fed said.

The broader shift toward a service-based economy has also hurt men, economists say. Between January 2025 and March 2026, the U.S. economy created 369,000 jobs - of which 94 percent went to women and 6 percent went to men, an analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data by the University of Michigan's Stevenson shows. That's partly because new jobs added to the U.S. economy during that period were in health care or private education. Men often shy away from jobs in those industries because of their lower pay and status, economists say.

Reasons given by men 25-54 not in the workforce from 1990 to 2025.
“Ill or disabled” is the largest cohort, over 50% in 1995 down to a little over 40% by 2025.
“Retired” has grown from maybe 8% to about little over 10%.
“In school” is fairly consistent, maybe 10-11%.
“Caretaking” has risen from about 10% to closer to 20%.

So first we get to this one for men/boys 16-24, and I immediately check out that bump at the bottom in illness/disability. Not the biggest % but that’s a meaningful bump!

For young men, school is the biggest reason for not working.

When the Children's Orthopedic Hospital Association's plans for Fresh Air House become known, several neighbors near the new site object that the presence of
"deformed children" will disturb their quiet surroundings and depress their property values. They argue that pregnant women in the neighborhood will suffer risks to their own unborn babies if they view crippled children.
The neighbors draft an ordinance that all children convalescing after surgery be sent to the "Pest House" on Seattle's Beacon Hill - an infirmary where the county sends citizens with contagious diseases such as diphtheria and tuberculosis.
