the wild turkey, america’s peacock

A wild turkey male is pictured stepping out from the brush onto a gravel path. It has an erect reddish snood atop its head, a whitish beak, and blue around the eye. The head is white with red caruncles, and its neck terminates with a vibrant red wattle. Long modified feathers called a beard hang like a tassel from its breast, near its air sacs. The body feathers are russet brown and black with green and copper iridescence. Its wing tips have mottled white banding. Its tail tan is folded and extended long, with the tail feathers featuring colors such as green, purple, and chestnut. It has long reddish legs with long toes and prominent tarsal spurs. He is a fancy boy.

Fernie is a brindle pitbull mix with white patches on her chest and toes. Her right front leg is amputated, and she is wearing a red harness that says “TRIPAWD.” She is mid gallop with only one leg on the ground. Her warts are alert but flopped over at the tips. Her mouth is wide in almost a “smile” and her tongue is lolled out to the side. She is running across a rocky riverbank with a large fallen tree in the background. She looks extremely happy and it is a perfect action shot. Black dogs are extremely hard to photograph but it’s a beautiful sunny day with perfect lighting.

old lady fernie

Here’s all the ones I found.

It states there are over 4800 “sites” in over 160 countries. A collection of dots appears to have been duplicated (copy-pasted) at least 12 times, which are outlines by red boxes.

Prisoner Wine Co. has been a long-time favorite of mine, so I was thrilled when they came out with their Unshackled brut rosé. Fruit forward, apricot, peach, floral notes, good minerality. Pairs well with sunshine and fruity or creamy desserts.

Roederer Estate in Anderson Valley, CA has a kickass brut that is one of my favorite gift wines. Expensive enough to show you care but won’t break the bank. Pear, spice, hazelnut come from oak aging of some wines added to the blend. Pairs best with good friends and a celebration.

Another “California Champagne,” I like to recommend this one to newbies. It’s a little sweeter on the finish with less minerality than classic dry sparkling wines, which I think makes it more approachable. Baked apple, orange zest, and honeysuckle. Pairs well with entrees like seafood and pasta.

Now we go to “California Champagne” with Chandon Brut. Made using the methode champagnoise, you get champagne taste at domestic prices. Often <$25 as well. Green apple, pear, citrus, soft finish. Food friendly, honestly I like this one with fried chicken.

Next up is another budget buy. Mionetto’s Prosecco. I like this one in cocktails like a French 75 due to the larger bubbles produced by stainless steel fermentation. Golden and green apple, honey, melon, white peach with good acidity. Pairs well with light appetizers.

We’ll start with this vintage brut rosado Cava by Naveran. This is a blend of organic Pinot Noir with Parallada grapes. Tiny bubbles, red fruit, vanilla, and a bit of spice. Often less than $25, which is a steal for a vintage Cava. Great for sipping but pairs well with charcuterie/soft cheeses.

Here’s a visual. The % change in income for the top 1% is ~exponential, while that of the bottom 99% is ~linear. We should be PISSED about this, and use that rage to organize for more equitable conditions. We can do that while recognizing that material circumstances have improved.

Ireland has been somewhat reproductively isolated, with many having mostly Gaelic ancestry. On the other hand, “the English” were composed of Angles, Saxons, etc. Isolated populations accumulate characteristic genetic markers, making them easier to identify in people of mixed ancestry.
