Pretty sure this is the earliest literary reference to Heathrow I’ve seen (1951, taking about 1946 or -7).
I believe this comes under the rare heading of ‘perks in an academic job’.
Exam Board successfully done; year closed down; everyone happy who should be. Cheers all!
I’m not overly interested in football, but I’m very glad I have a local where you can turn up on an evening like yesterday’s with your own beer due to it being a tiny pub and block the street to watch a match.
Home for my aunt’s supposed 75th birthday (I think actually her 76th): already on large gins before the party starts…
So it turns out the two chapters I realistically had about five days to write before the end of August - and in the case of one of them, to research - are in fact due in November and January. That’ll teach me not to write down deadlines, but I’m feeling a *lot* more relaxed - cheers!
Glad to see @spacebjournal.bsky.social @spacebetween.bsky.social represented at @modernistudies.bsky.social @moderniststudies.bsky.social Weird Modernisms…
I love finding gems* amongst the books bought by the yard to decorate pubs and hotels. (Your definition of ‘gems’ may well vary…)
I have questions… Suitably weird room in the @modernistudies.bsky.social @moderniststudies.bsky.social conference hotel.
The strange ghosts of conferences past… (No, I’m not going to explain)
Have said sod it and am working on my phone from a pub in the Forest.
It must be hot again - I’m on the pints of sparkling water and Angostura. Which looks and smells like dentist’s mouthwash, but tastes far better and is extremely refreshing.
I’m drinking an iced coffee good enough to reconcile me with humanity on the hottest day of the year so far, which is a pleasant surprise.
Marking done - well, first-marking - and I plan to collapse for a weekend. Cheers, all!
