second #TillieWalden appreciation post of the day is one for #WitchSky / #TarotSky: the Cosmic Slumber Tarot. I'm very fussy about decks at this point and Walden's is one of the 3 I regularly use. It's full of detail and wonder, soft without sacrificing depth.

5 cards: the Hierophant, Ace of Pentacles, Princess of Pentacles, the Devil and the Four of Pentacles. The cards are mostly lush and bright.

it's a beautiful book about the way a child's life can vanish into the incredible pressure of child sports. but it's also very personal, uniquely Walden, full of vast silences on empty ice. You can feel her unfolding these uncomfortable memories on the page.

OK I'm going to do some #TillieWalden appreciation posts this weekend. The first of her books that I picked up was, ofc, her #FigureSkating book, Spinning. It's a memoir about Walden's childhood as a skater in Texas, slowly realising she was gay, and didn't want to skate all her life

Here's the thing about hierarchy: In order for someone to be at the top, someone else must be at the bottom. When hierarchy pits us against one another for perceived finite resources, our survival instincts become activated. When hierarchy becomes the very fabric that our society is crafted from, we become chronically exhausted. We live in a constant state of paranoia, consumed by our own survival needs and socioeconomic standing. We forget that pursuing the things required for our basic sense of security means that we're inherently upholding a system that pushes others to be without. When we're acting from this place of fear and scarcity, we're never at our best. But, we need only to remember that hierarchies are a construct, and the ideology they perpetuate around the perceived value of individuals and finite nature of resources are myths. We are always at our strongest when we're united with one another rather than in competition with one another. Remember that we have the collective power to dismantle these systems, and it starts with our individual egos.

I know some readers prefer I keep politics out of my writing. In this case, I’ve gotta ask: HOW???? The government is intentionally putting politics into sports! It is directly interfering in the event it is hosting! This meddling has been an issue since Trump’s inauguration in 2025. Most of the time, governments use major international sporting events to show how welcoming and benevolent they can be — even the really evil ones! This administration has chosen to use big events to showcase its steadfast commitment to exclusion and vindictiveness.

When I watch that clip of the Haitian-American crowd going nuts for Haiti, I see and hear what an American World Cup could have been: a celebration of our big, beautiful country that has become a home-away-from-home for people from every corner of the planet. A place that took in my family, and probably yours, too.

And looking through your own paradigm is like looking through plate glass: you don't even know it's there until you walk into it, or through it.
In the pertorming arts, the nasterful execution of a familiar idea can be deeply moving -- a great pertormance of a favorite song, for example. But the art that really blows my mind usually violates an assumption I didn't even realize I'd made, eliciting some variation of "Holy shit, I didn't know you could do that." When David Foster Wallace endnoted the endnotes; when I first heard a backward snare hit; when I first saw a violist play with her bow belly-up, the wooden side tapping on the strings; when Jeff Buckley held that last note of
"Hallelujah" for an hour; when I discovered that Sigur Rós wrote lyrics in a language with words but no meaning.

It's a long term trend that's due to economic development. We have fewer manual jobs now, and more jobs that require college-level skills. P much every developed nation has this trend.

That's due to a combo of aging boomers and young people staying in school longer. Core age labor participation (age 25-54) is pretty high. There's just fewer people in that age range than in the past, and fewer workers in the age 16-24 group
