In Unearthed Arcana, Racial Paragon Classes go beyond the problems of certain monster types being impossible to play as a 1 HD character under 3e rules and kind of turn Race-as-Class rules into a highly focused Prestige Class. 2/3
3rd Edition D&D kind of brought the Race-as-Class concept back twice. In Savage Species, Monster Classes navigate around the Monster Hit Dice and Level Adjustment mechanics. They create a "weaker" version of the monster that starts as a 1st level PC and that levels up to the MM monster power. 1/3
