HOW WE DISAPPEAR

I am in the store touching things.

Linen napkins, a blue bowl.

The world is on fire and I am choosing between two kinds of soap.

Everyone here is doing this, filling carts with small comforts while somewhere a child
goes to bed hungry, while the earth heats,
while men make decisions about who gets to live.

I know what this is, this careful arranging
while everything collapses.
This is how we survive.

And also how we disappear.

The aquarium had a beautiful exhibit today. The tanks were the length of the room, filling three sides of the space. This is just one little bit of prettiness.

Took a train an hour out of the city and up into the hills today to have lunch at my dad/stepmom's place. They've found a pretty spot full of flowers, greenery, and a great view. They plan to stay there for several months. My stepmom is thrilled. I think we'll be going up often!

Couldn't be me getting teary-eyed as I mend the flea market camo pants my oldest asked me to repair. They turn 18 this summer, and it feels like my time with them is getting short. All the feelings as we approach this next transition.

DESIRE CORNERS ME IN THE QUIET

On the beach, I take self-portraits with my eyes closed, standing in water that rises from ankle to neck in less than a second. In the darkroom's red glow, I mix fixer and developer, hang my film to dry and make print after print. At home, I light every burner on the stove, stir the sauce and boil water for pasta. Everything begins and ends with salt: chemistry to coax out the shadows that build my unseeing face in photos I'll never show anyone. Meals I make for my friends so I don't have to tell them I need them. The ocean I'm so scared of because it reminds me of love. At the bar, the band plays a song about a bucket with a hole in it and I think of my heart. I think of crickets rising at twilight, singing for touch, how science tells us the source of this music is the caress of one leg against another. I wish I could be as brave as an insect, let this longing make my body its instrument. In bed, a lover tells me, your heart is beating so fast. I roll over. I say, Don't listen.

Celebrating something special. Today marks 1 year since one of my teens began a life-saving medication. It feels amazing to see them doing so well. What better way to celebrate than a taste from the States. 😅 I could make it from scratch, but the novelty is what they prefer. This was hard to find!

Waiting to pick up Youngest from an outing with their friends. The jacarandas are starting to bloom all over the city, and the purple is so pretty! I'm taking advantage of the lovely temps to be out at the park today. It's supposed to climb to 34 or 35 next week. I'm not ready!

Today is a day of waiting. This winter, a leak on our balcony made it under the living room floor, causing a bubble & then a collapse. Repairmen are coming today to fix it. Or possibly tomorrow. We'll see! Next week they'll refinish the floors in the whole room. Not looking forward to that.
