Qasim Rashid is on the board of Common Defense, which has rescinded their endorsement of Platner. He says that’s the right decision. For a group, that’s the correct. What I haven’t seen from Rashid is a personal statement or apology. Unfortunately, I don’t expect one.

I wish I knew. I do think we need better education all around, for starters. We need local journalism again, too. Bad people are everywhere and anyone can run for office. It doesn’t mean anyone should win. The voters need to do better but we are losing the tools to do so.

THE ENVIRONMENT
As a scientist I regarded my duty in the Jail to be not only to guard the health of men facing trial for war crimes but also to study them as a researcher in a laboratory. I shared the opinion of ethnologists and politicians alike that Nazism was a socio-cultural disease which, while it had been epidemic only among our enemies, was endemic in all parts of the world. I shared the fear that sometime in the future it might become epidemic in my own nation.
Medical men know that when they isolate the germ or virus that causes disease among men, they can prepare a vaccine or serum that will protect us against it. I had at Nuremberg the purest known Nazi-virus cultures—22 clay flasks as it were-to study, and with but a short time in which to work. I took upon myself to examine the personality patterns of these men and, to a degree, the techniques they employed to win and hold power.
Though my work
was hurried and incomplete, I believe it was sufficiently fruitful to indicate which way we Americans should turn our thoughts and our education, our policies and our political methods, if we are to avoid the sad fate of the Germans.

I observed Juneteenth by taking my kids to Mount Vernon and making sure the first thing we did was visit the Slave Memoeial and African American Burial Ground.

Protecting the Troops
Smallpox was a deadly enemy, possibly more dangerous than the British army. Although rare in the colonies, outbreaks could devastate places where people lived close together.
George Washington survived smallpox during a trip to Barbados and was immune. Fearing the disease would weaken his army, he made a bold move in February 1777. He ordered all Continental Army soldiers to be inoculated secretly, so the British would not find out. Inoculation made the Continental soldiers sick for a while, leaving the army weak until everyone healed. This risky decision may have saved the Revolution by preventing a smallpox epidemic among the troops.

Rotavirus

According to WastewaterSCAN, rotavirus is still at "high" levels, with highest levels in the Northeast and Midwest.

Rotavirus is an easily transmissible virus that can cause severe diarrhea and consequential dehydration in infants and children. The current rotavirus vaccine prevents 40,000 to 50,000 hospitalizations annually.

Rotavirus is one of the vaccines that MAHA is making efforts to remove from the current vaccine schedule. Recently, Trump issued an executive order for HHS to move to adopt the limited schedule, putting more children at risk.

FORCED STERILIZATION
Hitler transformed Nazi racism from a political philosophy into a concrete public policy. As part of an overall effort to "purify" the German population, a program of forced sterilization was announced on July 14, 1933.
The Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring required that certain categories of persons be sterilized: anyone suffering from "congenital feeblemindedness," schizophrenia or manic depression, epilepsy, Huntington's chorea, congenital blindness or deafness, a severe physical deformity, or severe alcoholism.
So-called Genetic Health Courts administered this program.
The sterilizations began in January 1934. Within a decade, between 250,000 and 300,000 people-most of them Germans-had been forcibly sterilized.
Only the Roman Catholic church opposed the program consistently; German Protestant churches accepted it and often cooperated with it.
Nazi Germany was not the first or only country to sterilize people considered
"abnormal." Before Hitler, the United States had led the world in policies of compulsory sterilization. But no nation carried sterilization as far as Nazi Germany did. There, it led to a euthanasia program: the systematic murder of the physically and mentally handicapped.

During the 1930s, the Nazis singled out various groups for persecution. Jews became their main target, but hundreds of thousands of others were oppressed as enemies of the state.

Communists, Social Democrats, trade unionists, liberals, and pacifists were arrested for their political views or activities. Dissenting clergy faced imprisonment if they spoke out against the regime, while Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted for their refusal to swear allegiance to the state.

Others were oppressed because the Nazis viewed them as sources of social, racial, or biological "degeneration." Homosexuals were targeted because of their sexual orientation. Roma (Gypsies) and after 1939, Czechs, Poles, and Slavic peoples from the Soviet Union were stigmatized as racially inferior" and deemed threats to the German nation. The Nazis regarded mentally and physically disabled persons as lives unworthy of life."
