Last night I watched a 45 minute video about the Vought F7U Cutlass which was a ginormous shit show from start in 1948 to finish in 1959. (Shoutout to Not A Pound for Air to Ground) Goofy ass kids drawing of an F-14 tomcat ass jet. There never was a golden age.

Local monopolies.

Through a sweeping analysis of nationwide property data, Tapp discovered that the merger between Equity Residential and AvalonBay will create effective monopolies in at least seven communities, potentially handing the new company more power to hike rents and trample tenant rights.

That could look something like what played out in East Palo Alto, California, after Equity Residential gained ownership of more than half of the city’s multifamily rental housing market in 2011.

In subsequent months, Equity Residential sent tenants more than 1,000 “pay or quit” notices, many of them seeking rents higher than the maximum allowable under the city’s rent control regulations. The company’s representatives then began working behind the scenes to challenge enforcement of those regulations, even briefly wrangling a vice chair seat on the city’s rent stabilization board.

Locking things down while theft was down 5% sounds like a BS excuse

Shoplifting has surged in some places.
According to the council's report, shoplifting incidents reported to the police rose dramatically in New York (up 64 percent) and Los Angeles (up 61 percent) between January 2019 and June 2023. Contrary to media accounts, reported incidents declined over the same period in San Francisco (down 5 percent), even accounting for a large spike in 2021.
Similarly, police data shows that theft offenses in Washington, DC, including thefts from cars, fell from more than 25,000 in 2019 to roughly 21,000 in 2023. (DC data does not distinguish between shoplifting and other types of theft.)
It is not immediately clear what could be driving these discrepancies. In the case of New York, it is notable that shoplifting appears to have risen 5 < y since 2006

EDIT (Mar 5, 2026): It should also be noted that in the days after the above posts were made, it was discovered that the methods in these Al results were very similar to that of a 2014 paper of Pomerance, and in fact Pomerance has now released a short note showing how the methods of that paper also provide a solution to problem #728. math.dartmouth.edu/~carlp/bino...
Nevertheless, the Al-generated solution was the first to explicitly address this problem (though, as noted previously, this was in part due to the fact that the original formulation of the problem was not formulated well and contained some unwanted "trivial" solutions).

The sortie rate that the US can generate has been severely degraded by Iranian attacks on US air bases in the region. Grok estimates that the supremely important rate at which the US can degrade Iranian drone and missile capabilities I mentioned above, have to be marked down by 35-50%.
