drivers in blender can take pretty much any input as a control, and then map that to control pretty much anything else. You can definitely use a shapekey to drive bones. This usecase is actually pretty similar to a 2d iris driver I made recently, So I believe that drivers will work.

that photo wasn’t very clear, so I modeled it in blender. the plywood is attached to the front with two pieces of scrap wood, which are screwed to the panel. All the wood is glued and screwed. and I like to leave a little gap in case I need to solder to something to the front panel from below
I use blank 19" rack panels, a drill press, and a posca marker. for me the blank panels are cheaper then buying sheet-metal locally. There is also a 1/4 inch piece of ply mounted behind it to screw the circuit boards down to. Screwing everything down massively improves reliability.
