The War on Cars
@thewaroncars
A podcast about the fight against car culture. Hosted by Sarah Goodyear & Doug Gordon. Our bestselling new book, "Life After Cars" is out now from Thesis / Penguin Random House.
A comment we received about congestion pricing. Subway riders pay $3 to go home. And that's per person, so a family of four pays $24 to ride the subway round trip. The same family in a car would pay only $9 since the congestion fee only applies in one direction.
LIFE AFTER CARS is in good company at @communitybookstore.bsky.social in Park Slope, Brooklyn. We just had @michaelcpollack.bsky.social on the podcast so if you're in the neighborhood, go grab Sidewalk Nation! cc @samuelmoyn.bsky.social @yanisvaroufakis.bsky.social
This is why it's better to call it "car storage" instead of "parking." There are higher and better uses of this space than long-term storage for one person's private property.
Hey, Brooklyn! @greenlightbklyn.bsky.social in Fort Greene has signed copies of Life After Cars. Pop over there if you want one. The store offers very convenient parking! We're always able to find a spot right out front. cc @bunchbike.com greenlightbookstore.com/book/9780593...
NEW EPISODE: "Sidewalk Nation." In his new book, @michaelcpollack.bsky.social examines what he calls "America's most overlooked resource." Public space but private property, with laws that change block by block, how should sidewalks be managed? Listen now: podcasts.apple.com/lu/podcast/s...
Big thanks to @communitybookstore.bsky.social in Park Slope for continuing to stock LIFE AFTER CARS. They have three copies on the shelves and these have the "National Bestseller" label on them! Go get 'em, Brooklyn. www.communitybookstore.net/item/p5lAnqx...

The only example given of a cyclist doing something against a driver involves someone who threw their bike at a car, "damaging its hood." Who knows what happened, but that's the point! We're not saying throwing one's bike is appropriate, but what did the driver do in the moments leading up to this?
“I don't think either side really thinks about the other’s perspective" strikes us as a very odd thing to say in a country where nearly every person who rides a bike, especially for recreation, probably also owns a car while it is probably not true that most car owners also ride bikes regularly.
One one side you have people who just want to enjoy a nice bike ride without being injured or killed. On the other side you have people who become homicidal at the mere sight of cyclists or having to slow down for a few seconds. But "Road rage can go both ways."
New Patreon BONUS: "Sean Duffy's Great American Road Grift." The Secretary of Transportation's new online series is a giant conflict of interest packaged as a reality TV show. @henryburke.bsky.social joins us to break it all down. Become a supporter to listen! www.patreon.com/posts/bonus-...
