But the brain wasn't behaving identically underneath! ADHD adults showed reduced stimulus-related responses: ⬇️ P300 amplitude, ⬇️ SSVEP And ⬆️ beta power! Potential signs of reduced sensory connection and extra cognitive effort to reach the same behavioural outcome?
Surprising result #2: no reliable group difference in sleep-like slow wave density either. There was a small shift toward higher amplitude SW in ADHD, as we previously reported, but not sig! SW density decreased over time in both groups, opposite to what we usually see with time-on-task fatigue!
Surprising result #1: no group difference in performance! Misses, false alarms, RT, RT variability were all comparable across groups, with strong Bayesian evidence for the null result. ADHD does not always mean worse performance in sustained attention tasks!
We tested 99 adults (51 ADHD, 48 neurotypical) on the CTET: a task where you monitor a continuously rotating checkerboard and catch subtle changes in stimulus duration. Unlike the SART, it relies on temporal expectation, not response inhibition.

Sophia's figure also shows iota in wake and REM in the same individual. The low proportion of ppts for which iota is identified in both wake/REM can be explained by (i) attenuation of the signal at scalp level, (ii) stringent statistical criteria. ✅ Same frequency ✅ Same states ➡️ Same oscillation?

More broadly, our findings challenge the assumption that wakefulness always implies ongoing conscious content. The stream of consciousness may include brief gaps, often unnoticed subjectively, but detectable in behavior and brain activity. 12/n
Using multivariate classifiers trained on EEG data near probes, we could decode ON, MW, and MB above chance. Applying this model to unlabelled periods revealed a similar behavioural profile in the guessed-MB trials than for trails eventually labelled as MB by participants themselves! 10/n
Studying the stream of consciousness is challenging because asking people to report their mental state interrupts the very process we want to observe. To address this, we tested whether EEG features could predict mind states without relying on immediate reports. 9/n
Stimulus-locked EEG responses revealed a critical difference: while early sensory responses were preserved across states, late-stage processing associated with conscious access was strongly reduced during MB, unlike in MW or ON states. 8/n
Neurally, MB showed reduced fast-frequency activity and lower signal complexity over posterior regions, together with reduced long-range fronto-posterior information sharing: patterns consistent with reduced cortical integration. 7/n
Across behavioral and neural measures, MB showed a distinct profile, clearly separable from both MW and ON states. Behaviorally, MB was marked by slower responses and more missed targets, suggesting a transient disengagement from the task. 6/n
We analyzed EEG markers previously shown to track global changes in consciousness (stimulus processing, spectral power, signal complexity, and functional connectivity) to ask whether they also capture moment-to-moment changes in conscious content during wakefulness. 5/n
We recorded 62 healthy individuals in two continents while performing a sustained attention task (SART; visual go/no-go) along EEG recordings. At unpredictable times, they were asked to report their mental state just before the probe: on-task (ON), mind wandering (MW), or mind blanking (MB). 3/n

Very interestingly, within the stroke group, there was some correlation between the rate of occurrence of slow waves (density) and behavioural performance (correctness, reaction times). Perhaps slow waves could mechanistically be involved in the performance decrease?
We observed more sleep-like slow waves in stroke patients, with a rather diffuse scalp topography. There was no correlation at the scalp level between the location of these waves and the lesion site, perhaps due to diaschisis (network effect) and/or volume conduction.
In this study, we tried to bridge these two literature! With 30 stroke patients and 27 controls in two centres (Monash and Oxford), we examined the links between: 1️⃣ stroke and slow waves in non-invasive EEG 2️⃣ slow waves and behavioural performance (perceptual decision task)

A high NRD was predictive of mortality, which suggests that NRD helps patients to cope with breathing disturbances, but it might induce long-term adverse effects (e.g., perturbation of sleep), impacting survival!
Key findings: ➡️ NRD is present only in COPD patients ➡️ NRD drops during all sleep stages compared to wake ➡️ NRD is lowest in deep sleep (N3) and REM ➡️ Patients with better sleep quality show larger NRD decreases at night
We propose here a semi-automated analysis pipeline to analyse long (whole-night) EMG recordings. We measured respiratory muscle activity during polysomnography (sleep) in COPD patients and used an automated approach to extract NRD from thousands of breaths without manual scoring.
We discuss how metrics of consciousness (contents or states) could be integrated to better account for consciousness and its dynamics.
We try to bridge the two main approaches of conscious studies: the state (being conscious) and content (being conscious of) approach by examining how both states and contents evolve within and across wakefulness and sleep.
