Every time I cross the tracks in our town, named for a train station of all things, I wonder what if. Our flat Texas triangle would be perfect for high speed rail. Bringing communities closer together, reducing traffic and emissions, and undoubtedly boosting the economy. Maybe one day.

Hannah is an irreplaceable member of our Bryan-College Station cycling community. She regularly attended our group rides and social gatherings. She was a kind and inspiring person. A great woman taken away by a coward. She'll be sorely missed!
And that's a wrap. The first @us-sciod.bsky.social undergrad internship just came to an end. Our interns Mav and Gwen absolutely exceeded our expectations and we're excited to see them present their results at #AGU26 in San Francisco. Everyone in the pic helped to make their projects a success 🙌

I can't think of a movie that inspired my field more than Jurassic Park. Since elementary school I wanted to become a paleontologist and went to university because of JP. Once there I found a field, marine geology, that inspired me even more, but I'm always Dr. Grant at heart. RIP Sam Neill

Quite some nightmare-inducing pics @ifremer.bsky.social published after a recent Nautile deep sea expedition. Between 1950-1990, >200000 barrels of radioactive waste were dumped in the NE Atlantic. Onsite measurements reveal the presence of radionuclides, at levels higher than expected in this area.

In Punta Arenas, Chile we returned from downtown to the JR with stray dogs we befriended. One was so excited and fast that they ran up the gangway before anyone could stop them. Had to carry them off again 🥺 Please note as they're not wearing PPE they didn't cross the marking toward the rig floor.
During Exp382, while we were drilling in Antarctic Iceberg Alley a pod of humpback whales was so fascinated by us that they stayed for several weeks, sometimes coming so close they almost touched the hull.

Svalbard's mountains were the perfect height to illustrate our @us-sciod.bsky.social Exp403 drill sites. Our deepest hole off the coast was roughly the same depth as these mountains are high, ∼630m. It's amazing to think that some rocks from the valleys the glaciers carved ended up in our cores.
On Svalbard Exp403 scientists just had the rare chance to observe the sources & processes of ice-rafted debris found in our drill cores. IRD = rocks broken off by glaciers on land, rafted out at sea on icebergs, & dropped on the seafloor. It's an important indicator of past climate dynamics.
From pole to pole, colorful surface to lightless abyss, the oceans are the planet‘s largest habitat, driver of weather & climate, feed billions, absorbed ∼30% of CO₂ & ∼90% of excess heat from our actions, produce (& use up) 50% of all O₂, support the $3T blue economy... Happy World #OceansDay.
Melting permafrost on Svalbard. Our local guide told us this amount of melt used to occur not before mid July.

It’s just around freezing here on Svalbard but the permafrost wedges are already melting.
Just about 800mi from the North Pole, Longyearbyen will host the @us-sciod.bsky.social Exp403 postcruise meeting this week. It's great to see valleys carved by the same glaciers that our expedition analyzes, the debris of the former mountains ending up as ice-rafted debris in our sediment cores.
