Spending some time with one of my very favourite operas for an Explorations piece for Gramophone Magazine
My first Gramophone Magazine Icons piece on the great Eleanor Steber (well, it would be, wouldn't it) is in the May issue, where you'll also find me writing about Joan Sutherland and Sondra Radvanovsky
Sex, violence and the Trojan War. I have been spending time in the company of Hugo Wolf and Kleist for a Gramophone Magazine Explorations piece on Penthesiliea.
Still can't quite get over the thrill of finally seeing my Gramophone Collection piece on Debussy's Le martyre de Saint Sébastien in print.
After the most wonderful lunch yesterday, at Strada at the South Bank in London.

World AIDS Day. Recalling friends, lovers and colleagues who died, and the struggles people faced in the 80s and 90s. Always remember. One day, we will eradicate it.
My lovely new stripy beanie has just arrived from @beaniesmasato.bsky.social! Just the thing to keep me warm on wintry coastal walks and trips out. If you buy one, you know, they will donate another to someone homeless to keep them warm in winter, too. So please give them your support!
"C'était a Mégara, faubourg de Carthage, dans les jardins d'Hamilcar" A quiet evening in, reading Flaubert's Salammbô for the umpteen time. God, how I love this novel.
Thinking of my mum, who died ten years ago today. I still miss her terribly, though there are so many happy memories. She and I, meanwhile, in a café in Oxford, one of her favourite places, some time around 1990.
Have just found this going through a filing cabinet. Me in 1987, looking like something from a film by Jean-Luc Godard .......
Though famously rubbish at tech, I've been working out how to do photos on my laptop. So here is an attempt at a self-portrait .......
