Dr. Aymen Zaghdoudi is an assistant professor at the Institute of Press and Information Sciences in Tunisia, where he teaches press law, media and social media regulation, and constitutional law. He'll weigh in on the erosion of the rule of law in Tunisia.

Sahar Mechmech is the Inclusive Economies Manager at TIMEP. She'll speak on the state of the Tunisian economy, including the economic challenges facing ordinary Tunisians and how the regional war has economically impacted the country.

"Refugees just want to have a secure future. In high income countries where refugees are provided with support for integration, they become engaged citizens and serve their communities," explains Diana Rayes. "We need to move away from mitigation and stop gaps."

"A lot of rhetoric says nations in the West don't have the capacity financially [to host refugees], but these countries are spending 4 to 5 times more on border security. Refugees are proven to be an economic contribution. We have to rethink how we speak on this," Mustafa Alio.

Tunisia’s MoU with the EU as it pertains to migration raises concerns over its opacity. @hudamzioudet.bsky.social explains how human rights considerations have been swept under the rug, as there is no accountability and no protection of rights, which puts the credibility of the EU at stake.

Egypt’s new asylum law violates international obligations and principles, including the 1951 Refugee Convention. "The law is not giving access to the justice system for refugees and asylum seekers and is shrinking the protection space," says Nour Khalil.

"The fall of Assad changed the psychology of returns. It didn't magically create the conditions for safe and sustainable returns. We see that through lack of services, lack of documentation, housing damage, explosive ordinances," says Mustafa Alio, who made the choice to return.

"After April 2023, the Egyptian government changed the regulations affecting the entry of Sudanese refugees...We began to see family separations. Sudanese refugees had to seek visas and security approvals, which cost thousands of dollars they did not have," says Nour Khalil.

In Tunisia, "there have been arrests since 2023 of human rights activists, including not only those who fight for black African migrants, but those who advocate for other minorities," says @hudamzioudet.bsky.social, who also refers to the paradigmatic case of Saadia Mosbah.

Setting the stage, Diana Rayes lays out how Israel's aggression in Gaza and Lebanon and the war in Sudan have contributed to new forms of displacement, while also touching on the situation of Syrian refugees, which set the bar at the time for the largest displacement crisis.
