This is a graph from the OCED of employment in general goverment as a percentage of total employment for 2019 and 2021. Yes that's 5 years ago but honestly stuff hasn't changed that much. The OECD as a bench mark is about 18 percent. The countries are listed from left to right with Norway over 30 and Japan bottoming out the list at just under 5%. New Zealand is way the hell in the lower end below Mexico, the US, Germany and so on.

Okay I know that I am very late to the dahlia party, but this is my year. Daughter wanted dahlias for the wedding and boy oh boy did they delivery the goods. Auckland based peeps, we have such good weather to grow these for MONTHS. Get into it! Easy peasy. 🌱

Mercator projection world map with the forecasted coastlines if the seas were to rise 60 metres. It is not nearly as dramatic as the previous image which is 200 metres with the coastlines looking very similar in most areas. There is however quite a bit of salt water intrusion into mid-continental areas.

For years, a certain kind of liberal has either minimized such culture war rhetoric coming from the other side, or urged political actors of all stripes to ignore this, in favor of “material” and “kitchen table” issues—as though the state regarding one’s life as “garbage” has no tangible consequence, as if the terms of a fight can be determined by the person getting punched. But Trump has clarified an inconvenient fact—the culture war is an actual war.

As a result, many countries are drawing the same conclusions. They must develop greater strategic autonomy: in energy, food, critical minerals, in finance, and supply chains. This impulse is understandable. A country that cannot feed itself, fuel itself, or defend itself has few options. When the rules no longer protect you, you must protect yourself. But let us be clear-eyed about where this leads. A world of fortresses will be poorer, more fragile, and less sustainable.

Um... yeah. Nah.

Rain radar of the north tip of the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand supplied by MetService at 8:00am 21 January. While there is a bit of yellow indicating light rain from Auckland stretching up, east and west above that as you get towards Whangarei, it goes blue and light blue indicating heavy and very heavy. Then beyond that it's ugly AF with a LOT of light blue. The weather system is sliding straight down over the region so that light blue is definitely going to run over Whangarei and probably Auckland as well.

So gods help us but the late Feb wedding dahlias are going berzerk and blooming like crazy. As perennials (bulbs actually), I do think that this means there will be a new holiday tradition at the NZ Conger household.
