In 1962, James Baldwin said: "White people were, and are, astounded by the Holocaust in Germany. They did not know that they could act that way. But, I very much doubt whether black people were astounded."

The upper edges of the typed page are visibly charred and singed from the fire that nearly destroyed Hurston’s papers after her death. Hurston’s typed signature reads “Zora Neale Hurston, Fort Pierce, Florida, March 21, 1958.” The page appears archival and fragile, carrying visible evidence of both damage and survival.
