ok i'm getting the sense that "astoria mechanic font" is not evoking the extremely specific picture it does for me, so i just went through google street view and took some screenshots. the font is REALLY similar to the 1889 one above, and doesn't seem to be a pantograph (but i have no expertise)
omg guess what year this typeface is from. i found this cause i was trying to figure out why all those mechanics in astoria have the same handpainted font style. and i still don't know, except that it might be WAY older than i thought!
