I love serotinous pine cones 🌲🔥 (See alt text to learn more)

The spiky cone of the Knobcone pine (Pinus attenuata). Scattered populations exist in California and Oregon — primarily along the coast. Their cones are “serotinous”, sealed with resins that require hot fire to vaporize and release seeds. The cones can remain dormant (closed) for up to 20 years, only dropping from the trees and releasing seeds in the presence of hot fire (~200°C). Adults rarely live more than 80 years, with thin bark and low hanging branches seemingly adapted to provide kindling for their young rather than to withstand incidences of fire.
