We saw Romeo and Juliet in the St John’s College Garden Cambridge tonight. (Photos were banned btw) A lovestruck Romeo sang the streets a serenade Laying everybody low with a love song that he made Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade Says something like, "you and me, babe, how about it?"

Having watched a woman who could identify birdsong on Clarkson's Farm I downloaded an app. This evening we walked around Wenzhou Kean Uni campus #China and heard some beautiful bird song and took some great photos. Check out the vid of the herons here: youtube.com/shorts/cS8O-... #birds #birding

All the feral 🐈‍⬛ 🐈 s we feed except 1 have disappeared and now there is no one there to greet us tails up demanding food miowing loudly. They’ve been gone about 2 weeks now so it’s suspicious.This guy under the car is the bruiser who got all the girls pregnant he’s still around too. It’s 32c outside

#Stunday - A rose on the University campus - Roses as a genus are native across the Northern Hemisphere, but #China is one of their important native homelands. See Alt text.

Some roses are native to China, but not all roses generally.

China is actually one of the key historical centres of rose diversity and cultivation. Several important wild species are native there, including:

Rosa chinensis (China rose) — probably the most historically important, as it helped create many modern repeat-flowering garden roses.
Rosa multiflora — native to China, Japan, and Korea.
Rosa banksiae (Lady Banks’ rose) — native to central and western China.
Rosa laevigata (Cherokee rose, despite the name) — native to southern China and Taiwan.
Rosa omeiensis — native to Sichuan.
Rosa hugonis — native to northern/central China.

China has a very long rose cultivation history, going back many centuries, and Chinese roses were hugely influential in European breeding in the 18th–19th centuries because they introduced repeat blooming (flowering more than once a season), which older European roses largely lacked.

So: Roses as a genus are native across the Northern Hemisphere, but China is absolutely one of their important native homelands.
