The hazy sunrise out our kitchen window at 7:00 am this morning. August 4, 2026. Just north of Lake Washington and Seattle. There was ash on the car and you can smell the smoke from the multiple fires in Washington state.
Walked around El Rancho de las Golondrinas (Ranch of the Swallows) in New Mexico. Some U Mass archeology students were excavating another building foundation. It was 98 F and I think I would have found another place to live than this in the 19th century. www.nps.gov/places/el-ra...

Some puppets and effigies I have met this week in #NewMexico . Seems to be a thing here. Some obvious, some mysterious and some ridiculous. Some confusing as well.
Drove into the Valles Caldera Natural Preserve on Monday and walked along an old trail. People came here 10,000 years ago to gather obsidian and other resources. We found obsidian, magnificent views of the Valle and a little guy.
Yesterday we hiked in the #VallesCaldera natural preserve in New Mexico. We watched the hero of this elk herd drive off a coyote the was trying to sneak and snatch a calf. Now managed by the National Park Service, this beauty is accessible to all Americans.
Hiked down into Frijoles Canyon in #Bandelier nm. June 22 2020. Hottest day record. Much warmer for June than I remember when I lived here 40 years ago. Saved by a park volunteer from Scotland that gave us a ride back to our car at the top. Might be something to climate change?
Visited Indian Pueblo Culture in Albuquerque. Saw a world class museum of Native American Culture, purchased a beautiful Acoma seed jar that will now grace our home and watched this Acoma Pueblo youth dance group perform. Highly recommend visiting this unique center. m.youtube.com/watch?v=cC3e...

Hairy #Woodpecker friend we met in the #Redmond Watershed this morning. The salmon berries are ripe and we watched feed these to a juvenile- along with whatever goodness she was able to dig out of this rotten snag.

Mrs. TC and I rode our people powered #bicycles 15 miles up the Snoqualmie Valley trail along the river and through fields and forest from #Duvall to #FallCity and back. Saw three beaver lodges and birds at the Stillwater ponds. Earned our lunch and carrot cake in #Carnation on the way back down.
Walking #NativeIrisTrail in #Eugene last Saturday, watched a pair of Acorn #Woodpeckers work this snag and fend off an invading squirrel. Learned the bulbs of these purple flowers are called #Ookow and were food eaten by the Maidu and Nisenan American Native cultures.
Biked along the Dungeness River from #Sequim to #PortAngeles WA. Blue sky’s, fresh rapids and baby cows.
