Trócaire CEO Seán Farrell knows first hand the heartbreak and devastation Ebola brings, having worked in Sierra Leone during the 2014/15 outbreak. Drawing from our experience of that, as well as the 2018 Ebola outbreak in DR Congo, we know what to do to stop the spread and save lives.

The UN now say somebody is dying of Ebola in DR Congo every 30 minutes, and almost a third of all deaths are children. This is a global emergency, and the international community must act.

On World Humanitarian Day, we honour the courage and commitment of our own staff and all other humanitarian workers around the world to support and protect those who need it most. In 2026 so far, 82 aid workers have been killed, 97 injured and 39 kidnapped across the world.

It's still happening. Just because it's in the news less, doesn't mean it's not happening. In Palestine, Israel are committing genocide while the UN have found 'hallmarks of genocide' in El Fasher in Sudan. We must keep calling it out whenever it occurs. 'Never again' is becoming 'time and again'.

For the people of Kagaba and Soke in DR Congo, open, honest dialogue has meant that members of both communities can now work, travel and live without fear of violence. Thanks to Irish Aid for supporting this project, and for our local partner RADPI for implementing it so effectively.

For Gabay, droughts, flash floods, pests & poor soil left her farm producing barely enough to feed her own family. With Irish Aid support, she received drought-resistant seeds, farm tools & training in eco-friendly farming techniques, including composting, crop rotation & natural biopesticides.

What does rural development look like in practice? For Gabay, it looks like a maize harvest growing from 4 sacks to 14. Rural communities are where our food systems begin. Yet they are among the first to feel the impact of climate change, food insecurity & poverty.
