Making the invisible visible. Lessons learned: identifying, supporting and translating academic research that has climate innovation potential

Visibility is necessary, but insufficient on its own: People and support programmes enable translation.

Timing matters: early-stage intervention improves decision-making. Early-stage intervention reshapes innovation trajectories more than it accelerates outcomes.

Innovation is relational: it advances through networks, not in isolation. Academics need cross-disciplinary and cross-sector networks that can introduce complementary expertise, challenge their assumptions, and help them steer their research direction.

Tools like alma can surface talent and ideas that traditional systems miss. Operating on an agnostic basis expands who can be seen, particularly researchers who would not identify as innovators.
