That's still one of my favorite weird historical facts, and here's better alt text for that second pic. I can't imagine living such a long life, especially in that time period. I wonder what events and which people will bridge our current time to the future.

Peter Mills (October 26, 1861 - September 22, 1972) was the last known surviving American born into legal slavery when he died in 1972 at age 110.
Mills was born in Prince George's county, Maryland on October 26, 1861. After the civil war, he worked on his father's farm every day during the week before leaving to work in Baltimore and Washington DC where he dug sewers, was a bricklayer and plasterer and played baseball in his spare time. Mills eventually moved to Pittsburgh after first visiting in 1881. Mills died after a pedestrian accident in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania on September 22, 1972.

Had some nice days at the beach, but I could go for a nice windy wavy one

A cloudy day at lake Michigan from an overlook. The dunes below are green with grass and oak and pine trees. The sky and water are gray. There are some dark clouds beneath the hazy sky.

An overcast day at lake michigan. The top half of the sky is white but the bottom half is gray with some darker clouds. Lake Michigan is an indescribable mix of light and dark, like a dim light that blinds you in the night.

There is a blue gap in the hazy skies between the clouds. A tall cloud over the horizon breaks into the sunshine, but the rest are dark over the lake. There are some small waves on the water.

It felt a lot different but equally extreme.

This weekend I went to the farm park and had one of those million flower days

This was another nice windy day at the beach even tho it covered my stuff in sand.

It was so cool watching the storm roll in the other day. It seemed like the clouds got faster as they got closer until they became very dark and it was like standing in a hairdryer when the clouds hit and they were twisting and pulling themselves apart above me.

One thing I love about the lake is I never know what it's going to look like when I show up, even if I check the weather first and look at the sky at my house

As the sun approaches the horizon it has fallen behind thick dark clouds, with a few hints of red and orange, and the pattern of colors and clouds are reflected across the lake's surface.

Dark clouds now fill most of the sky, but sunset colors still show over the horizon and on the lake.

Looking away from the sun the sky is a nice mix of blues and grays, and the lake is silvery with a dark band of water in the distance.

Sunset was beautiful last night

A hazy cloudy sky over lake Michigan, a boat is on the water next to a column of light cast by the white yellow sun. Near the horizon are some orange tinged clouds and the lake has a silvery sheen.

Looking away from the sun, the sky and Lake Michigan is a mix of pale blues and dark clouds.

The sun has turned gold as it hits a thin patch in the clouds, spreading color across the sky and sea.

The sun's golden light now covers the lake with dark slashes where waves break the reflection.

I went swimming for the first time this year and it was fucking freezing of course, but I got to stand in a school of fish each about half a foot long and I'm pretty excited with how the sandbar is sitting, looking like a good summer for swimming 😎 thank you goddesses Water, Waves, and Cold.

I started my last day in Chicago with the Mexican art museum and it was so amazing! I also went to the art institute later that day but I'll save that for another thread

It blows my mind that dice have been the same for so long, but I guess it's a pretty simple idea

The top of a column made of dark stone has a double ended double headed bull, which is missing its horns because they were likely made of precious metal.

A few six sided dice, they are white white black dots to mark the number on each side. The sign says "six-sided dice Dice eventually replaced throw sticks and knucklebones. Like modern dice, the faces of these six sided dice are marked from one to six with opposing sides totaling seven. Dice bone or ivory, bitumen. Egypt Oxyrhynchus(modern Bahnasa) Roman period 30 BC-AD337) excavated by the Egypt exploration fund in 1903-04 E8493-97

Such beautiful artistry in death

Ancient Egypt really was amazing, their legacy is pretty much unbeatable

This guy had five legs WAY before ai

A massive statue of the head of a bearded man on the body of a winged bull. It has four thick strong legs and a long tail to match the long beard. He is wearing a tall hat or crown.

Standing a bit closer helps show the scale of this behemoth stone wall. There are lots of little details on the statue, including veins on the bull's legs, and a subtle butthole under the beast's tail.

A close up of the face shows long hair and beard, a thick unibrow, a shaved upper lip, and added detail in the feathers that cover the front of the animal body.

Looking at the statue's legs show that from the front you can see two legs held together like a bull standing, but from the side you can see four legs making a stepping motion, and it's only from the corner where you can see all five.

I really enjoyed the institute for the study of ancient cultures, but it made me want to see these things in their glory days. It was also a convenient location between the DuSable black history museum and Jackson Park

Here's pics from day two of my museums trip to Chicago. It really is amazing how people haven't really changed all that much even if everything around us is different. It's so hard to think of where we'll be in 5000 years, but I think we'll still be drinking out of straws

There's been this persistent walnut growing in my front yard that I've been cutting down for years, so I decided to dig it up by the root and see if it's as tenacious in a pot. I have no clue if I transplanted it right but it was just for fun.
