Harry Truman - From Lost Cause to Civil Rights. Some people raised in lies are, when they have the opportunity to experience what other people's lived experience is, change.

Once Truman set out on this new course, he would not relent. When Democratic leaders asked him to back down from his strong stand on civil rights, he replied: “My forebears were Confederates.… Every factor and influence in my background—and in my wife’s for that matter—would foster the personal belief that you are right.

“But my very stomach turned over when I learned that Negro soldiers, just back from overseas, were being dumped out of Army trucks in Mississippi and beaten.

“Whatever my inclinations as a native of Missouri might have been, as president I know this is bad. I shall fight to end evils like this.”

A 1962 essay on slavery in American Heritage Magazine.

Dr. Alexander Falconbridge, who had made four slaving voyages as a surgeon. Falconbridge testified that “he made the most of the room,” in stowing the slaves, “and wedged them in. They had not so much room as a man in his coffin either in length or breadth. When he had to enter the slave deck, he took oft his shoes to avoid crushing the slaves as he was forced to crawl over them.” Falconbridge “had the marks on his feet where the slaves bit and pinched him.”

I looked at pine nuts at the grocery store yesterday but did not buy them once I saw they were labeled as "from Siberia," which I don't think is the correct name for the country of origin. Why are we importing these? Plus, they looked tiny and nasty.

Who among us hasn't yearned to have their terminal cancer financed by a health insurer who won't pay out?

Under this approach, people who develop a costly disease or need unexpected emergency care would be able to turn to their health insurer for loans to cover their share of the bill. The debt, though, would have to be repaid, presumably with interest.

He has become sort of The National Goofball. And he’s darned good at it.

What would the average guy do if his wife caught him playing around and took him for a fortune in divorce court and his business collapsed and he owed the banks a fortune? The average guy would put his head between his hands and moan.

Not the National Goofball. In the midst of all that chaos, he goes on ”Larry King Live” and coolly offers advice to the nation on how it can once again achieve economic and social stability. If the show hadn’t run out of time, he might have offered his services as a marriage counselor.

There are goofballs and goofballs. But Trump is the best.
