I'm a scientist studying fluid dynamics in the cores of rotating planets and stars. I mostly post pics of clouds and timelapses. All media by me. He/him.
A bit late but this is what the eclipse looked like from Belgium. In about two weeks (28th of August), the lunar nodes are still aligned with the sun and we will have a moon eclipse! 🧪 🔭
A gas giant planet like #Jupiter can 'pulsate' at many different frequencies. We call them 'eigenmodes'. This is how one such #eigenmode might look like. They can be excited by the tidal pull of Jupiter's moons as they orbit the #planet. I will present this work at #EPSC2026 🧪 🔭
Some high and iridescent clouds close to the Sun as it sets today. You can see some gravity wave patterns too. 🧪⚛️
I received today my Klein bottle, made by the legendary Cliff Stoll. So happy! #Mathematics 🧪
One of the largest #sunspot groups of the current #solar cycle, AR4478, here as imaged today from Hoogstraten, #Belgium. It sits pretty much at the center of the solar disc at this moment. And it's really big, about 16 Earth diameters from side to side! 🧪 🔭 #astrophotography
Two types of #clouds, dark ones in the foreground and bright ones in the background. The bright ones are #noctilucent clouds, near 80km high. This is around midnight from #Belgium. Clouds are illuminated by the Sun, not too far from the horizon this time of the year. 🧪 🔭
The heavy #thunderstorm hitting the #Netherlands today's evening, as seen from 100 km south. Here in Belgium we have a severe thunderstorm warning, we expect also heavy rain soon.
Walking around the #mountains I came across the rock that inspired #Magritte 's "Le Château des Pyrénées" #art
A #thunderstorm over The Hague, the Netherlands, last night, as seen from about 100 km south. This is around midnight. City lights and lightning illuminate the storm #clouds. But there's also a hint of #noctilucent clouds in the background. 🧪
This is what a heavy #thunderstorm loos like from a distance. We seldom get to see the strong #convective motion. In a very unstable #atmosphere warm and very humid air near the surface rise up. This passed just a couple of kilometers from my house today. 🧪 ⚛️
The pattern in the clouds is called a "Von Kármán vortex street". Their size is roughly 100 km. Very interestingly, the same pattern can be recreated at a much much smaller scale. Here they are, just a few centimeters across, visualized using a rheoscopic fluid: [2/2]
This is what the clouds around the Canary Islands look like at this moment. 🧪 [1/2]
The Sea of Vapors (Mare Vaporum) on the moon. Lots of rilles (channels), and mountains. 🔭 🧪 #astrophotography
The Apenninus mountains near the Apollo 15 landing site, as seen from my garden tonight. 🧪 🔭 #astrophotography
Today the Moon and Venus are only a few degrees apart. Here's a 20 sec timelapse, spanning about 30 min real-time. 🧪 🔭
