Best food for dinner in this heatwave is homemade picnic cob loaf and delicious salmorejo.
One chicken, three meals (plus leftovers): Hainanese chicken rice, next day used the chicken and stock for a Sarawak laksa, then used this stock the day after to cook the rice for a chicken nasi goreng. All of them delicious!
Happy 100th birthday, Sir David Attenborough. Your documentaries have inspired us to seek out wildlife adventures around the world and to volunteer to help wildlife at home.
This morning's foodie shenanigans: make Madagascan vanilla gelato. Our first attempt at gelato. DELISH!
Hands up who wants a hand-made cheese and wild garlic scone, hot and slathered in Alderney butter?
It was fantastic! (Don't worry - when we told anyone we were visiting Mauritania, their first reaction was, "where?") It's an amazing country - we had a blast travelling through the Sahara, visiting ancient cities on the caravan route and then sailing on traditional fishing boats.
You might not think of Mauritania as a destination for foodies, but much of the cuisine was absolutely delicious. We managed to bring back an interesting haul of goodies.
What's better than riding the iron ore train in Mauritania? Not riding the iron ore train and sleeping under the stars at Ben Amera, the world's second biggest monolith.
Hands up who wants a home made chirasizushi bowl? With fresh wasabi of course!
Inspired by our recent trip to Italy we ate panini for dinner tonight. Home baked focaccia (with home grown herbs) and the filling was: home made tapenade, prosciutto, mozzarella and marinated artichoke. It was DELISH!
We love doing cookery classes when we travel. In Bologna today we learned to make tagliatelle with ragu and tortellini in a sage butter sauce. Both SO DELICIOUS!
Our trip to Italy continues with a stay in Bologna, a lovely mediaeval city with a young population. Day trip to San Marino, which is just delightful. We arrived just before the fog came in...
The food scene in Florence is amazing. Enjoyed a trip to Chianti to taste the wine. Did you know that paninoteche, the forerunner of the panini, was invented here? The negroni cocktail was also invented here, so we felt it would be rude not to visit the bar where it was created.
Italy is turning out to be rather wonderful. It's cold and crisp and because it's low season we've been able to get into galleries without pre-booking. Rome was fascinating and Florence is one of the most beautiful cities we've ever visited.
Had a go at making Hainanese chicken rice with soy and garlic/chilli sauces. It was delish!
We received a DVD of the charming film, The Taste of Things, for Xmas, thanks to @jollyhobos.bsky.social for the recommendation. Delighted to discover there is a QR code for the recipes in the film - a really nice touch.
Ice-cream with berry syrup and pickled mushrooms? Delicious! Who'd have thunk it!
Our yummy haul from Oman - lots of dates (of course), plus frankincense coffee, date syrup, saffron, cardamom, cinnamon as well as some soaps, frankincense and myrrh.
The view from our bed in the Wahiba Sands. Sleeping under the stars was just magnificent!
The Jebel Shams in Oman. A fantastic 4WD drive to the viewpoint, where you can see the splendour of the Al Nakhur Canyon, often described as The Grand Canyon of Arabia.
Hello Oman! Exploring the Mutrah district of Muscat with its lovely corniche.
Overpriced beers at the airport again. No more booze for a while after these, as we're headed to Oman! Very excited.
Ever since we visited Guyana we wanted to try making pepperpot, a celebratory dish. A rainy old day in England gave us the perfect chance to have a go. This is an hour in, two more hours to go...
Overpriced beers? Must be at the airport. Cheeky trip to Guernsey.
Our home-grown wine is now in the demijohn. Actually, it's in 2 demijohns as the grape harvest was so great. Currently at what we call the 'pepto-bismol stage' but it will clear. Fermenting beautifully - I think we're going to have a fantastic 'vintage' this year!
Our little vine in the English midlands has been super-generous this year. We've been making wine! (And yes, we did crush the grapes with our - clean - feet)
Smorrebrod for dinner. All home made, much home grown. We even made them rye bread!
