CW for gore I've shared an earlier version of this before but the last line always makes me laugh. From Island of the Baboon God, my old school sword and sorcery novella

“You’re not Leukos,” Freyjrulf said. He tried not to sound too disappointed.
His words were ignored. “Barbarian bastard! You who scorn the gods, defiling the lands where you walk! The disease of your beliefs will not be spread to another land! All those who stand before the will of the true king will be stricken from the face of reality itself-”
Freyjrulf’s hand snapped behind him, grasping one of the fangs of the skull. With a jerk and a crack, it freed itself into his hand. Freyjrulf threw the fang with all his strength. The speaker’s face crunched, cartilage and
bone shattering as the fang buried deep into the flesh. Blood drooled down the exposed flesh, the sword tumbling from the man’s hands as he raised them uselessly towards his face. He died gurgling before he hit the ground.
Perhaps, Frejyrulf considered, he lost his temper.

Warm air wrapped around me. I'd feared the humidity would fog my glasses, but the weather cleared by the time I left the Estate. The people I passed scarcely glanced at me, proving my clothes were a wise choice. A
streetwise Runner I looked, all brown and red with cap upon my black hair, my red waistcoat well cared for. It is a very different job to be a city Runner than a nobleman's, after all. And to draw attention could disrupt the entire investigation.
"I don't like to send you alone," my prince had said, "with not even Sir Hepatica to protect you, should you encounter the workers of the Night Gods."
"I need no protection this time," I had protested.
“You don’t know that,” he had said. Even now, as I write this false letter, I can see him, standing by the fireplace. His dark brown skin was warmed by the light of the flames, the charms wrapped around the dark locs of his hair glowing faintly with protective magic, black beard well-trimmed, black eyes staring at me. At me, at me, at only me.

#SummerOfStories I can't share the actual climax or the events that led up to it but I'd say this part in Island of the Baboon God is pretty intense! CW animal harm, violence and gore

Freyjrulf turned. The god-beast stuffed a dead monkey’s tiny body into its mouth, bones crunching bone and fur, swallowing before snatching up another of its worshipers. Freyjrulf stared, horror slowing his mind.
Man and beast alike prayed to it, yet it devoured them all so carelessly. No wonder they fled to the mainland.
A soft hand touched his arm, and he felt his growing rage oddly soothed. Freyjrulf did not look over his shoulder, for the youth’s breath
brushed hot against his ear.
“Destroyer?” the youth said, and chuckled. “My destroyer, what do you have to fear but me?”
Freyjrulf grinned.
“This is him?” he said. “This is the god who betrayed my ancestors?”
The god-beast turned, bits of flesh still clinging to its teeth.
Freyjrulf laughed.
“Let me show you personally, ancient one, what I do to gods!”
The muzzle split open, wings flaring with red and yellow beneath the dirt. It screamed, splatters of bloody foam ripping from its mouth. That bloody hand swung towards him, and Freyjrulf was ready.

Made with Love: working title. Cozy fantasy romance short story set in 80s cartoon inspired world. Heroic ex-princess trans guy is preparing for a visit from his ex, but a mischievous villain keeps interrupting. HFN, part of a larger series.

#JuneJottings I've shared this before but I'll share it again. This line defines Lazarus' relationship with Harlan imo. From my outline for PSI 2... I really hope I can keep it in the final version!

"Not this again," Lazarus says softly.
"I'm not letting that go," Harlan says. "I'll never let that go. Pray I'll let you go after I'm done with you."
"There aren't many gods I can pray to for that, are there?" Lazarus says
Harlan smirks, leans down towards Lazarus, who flinches back in his chair, and says, "I could be your god, if you wanted."
Lazarus swallows hard

Copy pasting my PSI 2 WIP notes from Tumblr because I'm lazy They aren't the only Masks (yes that name was used on purpose iykyk) they're just the ones relevant for my current WIP Nothing is set in stone yet tho. I need to do a lot more research...

Working on adding new characters to Harlan's group:
Black siblings, older sister and younger brother. Both college educated. Their father worked for Harlan when he was an up and coming criminal, and when he retired, Harlan paid for his kids' education as a thanks. They are what Lazarus thinks of as "good people": cis, straight, educated, and socially accepted by their peers.
They are two of Harlan's Masks, people who do the work Harlan can't or doesn't want directly connected to him. The sister shows up in this story. She normally has a major role with the employees at the primarily black locations Harlan owns, but Harlan wanted to speak to her in person tonight after dealing with (the plot).

Lazarus, sitting down. Harlan stands behind him, a hand on the back of the chair or bench. Lazarus doesn't look at him.
"Cigarette?" Harlan says.
Lazarus says, "You know I don't smoke."
Harlan chuckles. He leans down, wraps an arm around Lazarus, and snaps the lighter on in front of his face.
Harlan husks in Lazarus' ear, "Humor me."

In Island of the Baboon God, there's the Artifact, an item of great power created by the Ancients. What does it look like? What does it do? No one knows but the tyrant king sent his mage to get it so the hero has to find it first. Cue adventure!

Freyjrulf looked out into the night, at the moon, at the waves.
“Where could he find one of these artifacts?” Freyjrulf said.
Oathiel and Keener glanced at each other, matching hesitant faces, matching looks to their mother’s.
“The scouts and infiltrators say the same as our lorekeepers,” Oathiel said. “It is believed one hides on an island, the nearest one to our shores.”
Freyjrulf tilted his head. “Papiodyas?”
“Yes.”
“I’ve heard of that place,” Freyjrulf admitted. “But not of what could lie upon it.”
“It’s about three days, and three nights from here, by boat,” Oathiel said. “Lorekeepers claim the residents were cursed, transformed into monsters or wild beasts. But it’s been centuries since any settlement remained there. Who can say what is the truth?”
Keener licked her lips. “The locals by the shore claim a god lives there, even now. They hear screams and howls in the night, even from the
distance of the sea.”
Freyjrulf raised his eyebrows. “Really?”
“Yes,” she said. “And it kills anyone who dares step foot upon the island.”
Freyjrulf’s faint smile faded fast as it appeared. “How can you be sure there is anything of worth there?”
Oathiel took a breath. “Reports claim the Tyrant sent a small caravan towards the coast. The mage Leukos is at its head. There is no place of notice in these parts, nothing worthy of a mage’s personal attention. Nothing but the chance of the artifact.”
“So you say,” Freyjrulf nodded. “So I will find.”

Well, they aren't together yet but the yearning between Owen and Prince Aurum could kill someone. From the beginning and end of my short story Honoria, hope it's okay to share

Warm gloved fingers cupped my cheek. My gaze met the prince's, his dark eyes warmer and brighter than any flame. He knelt beside the fainting couch, closer to me than modesty might permit. But we were alone, and not
even you could bear witness to this moment. My foolish heart skipped as my gaze, briefly, fell upon his lips.
"You could've been killed," he said.
I looked away. My hand reached up, almost on its own, and wrapped around his wrist.
"Would it have been the first time?" I said, looking back.
The prince sighed.
"No," he said. "But now you are mine. And what would I do without you?"

#QueerPrompts For my latest PSI short story, I researched hotels in New England around or before 1931. Couldn't find much I could directly use, including floor plans, so I took inspiration from this image and made my own. Source in alt text, it's from Wikipedia.

Going with vibes today #WIPSnips From Island of the Baboon God, a sword and sorcery WIP. Freyjrulf has a vision! It's creepy.

The thunderous drums of his own heartbeat echoed in his ears. Black fog appeared in the corners of his vision. He was getting too angry. Taking a heavy breath, he closed his eyes and thought of the one thing that would settle his raging heart.
In his mind, he saw her, his Linwelle, dancing in the summer light, her skirt flaring around her legs as she spun, the smile wide upon her face. He closed his eyes and let himself forget where he was, forget this moment, and enjoy the crystal clarity of the image.
She smiled at him. No longer did she dance beneath the green leaves of his homeland. Now she stood upon the same blood soaked stone he did, her feet and the hem of her skirt stained with gore. She gestured him forward and pointed to somewhere beyond his sight.
Something was wrong with her eyes.
Freyjrulf snapped his eyes open. Stomach churning, he stepped away from the corpses. The vision, whether it be battle madness or sent from beyond, delivered the message despite the chills it gave him. This inner sanctuary must hold more than it appeared.

I can't imagine why anyone would name a house that. Honoria, a place of honor, though none existed in that city of terror and none remained in that sad little home. I suppose it sounded nice to the Albrights. Perhaps
they didn't know of its history. Perhaps they didn't care. I care, of course, as do you, oh treasured nemesis. I wonder if any of this would have befallen, if only they’d named their home something else.

The carriage dropped me off at the edge of the neighborhood. Lennox Gardens surprised me, so different it was from the beating heart of the city. So quiet. I could hear the wind rustling the dark newborn leaves of the trees and bushes. Laughing women walked together. Nurses pushed babies in prams. Children played in the street with chalk, tossed small balls, admired
flowers in gardens. Oh the flowers, blooming and glowing in the twinkling crystal light. Their sweet scent carried me down the streets.

Miss Wellstone hesitated, eyes rolling towards the heavens above. She squeezed her bare hands together. She gave me the impression she could not decide if she wanted to be honest or to lie. I expected a lie regardless.

"… Yes," she admitted at last.

"Then I must do as I have been instructed," I said. "And I would do so no matter what. Now, if you please, do let me search the room in question, so I can do my job."

"Now, you look here, boy-" Mr. Albright began, but I interrupted.

"If you throw me out, I will go to the city guard. They will listen to me over you, especially when they see the letter from your only child!"

Silence swept over the room. Mr. Albright’s face flushed bright red. Miss Wellstone’s face twisted into a glare. A look passed between them, the two shifting away from each other as their gaze broke apart. Mr. Albright closed his eyes, and Miss Wellstone bowed her head. I frowned. Did they suspect each other, as I suspected them? One of them must have killed Mrs. Albright… but did one of them do it alone, or did they do it together?
