I always understood that reference to be the "Templar" /"Crusader"/ "Jerusalem" flag (13th century on, carried in the Crusades).

"Crusader or "Jerusalem" flag" motif used during the Crusades. Banner shows a red cross in the middle (equal lengths of all four arms) with a smaller red cross in each corner.

Spending the holiday weekend w/ friends in Cambridge, Maryland, where this statue of Harriet Tubman was unveiled several years ago, at the courthouse where slave auctions were once held. Which sets this particular date (past & future) in perspective. We’re not done.

Statue of Harriet Tubman on the Dorchester county courthouse steps. In 1850 Tubman helped her nieces escape from here (& she ultimately helped numerous enslaved people escape to the north). The bronze statue shows her reaching out to a young girl with one hand and holding up a gilded star in the other. At the base of both figures is a pile of broken shackles.

My father died 28 years ago. There are significant parts of my life that he missed & questions I never got to ask. We moved constantly - almost every year, for the first 10 years of my life. Even after my parents settled, they continued to move from one place to another. But everywhere we ever lived

Just returned from a Stumbling Stones ceremony for 8 individuals enslaved in Arlington VA (modeled on the European Stolpersteine project)—over 100 stones are now embedded throughout the county (local historians document ca. 4000 enslaved persons in this county alone).

Mother’s Day. My daughter sent me these beautiful roses, my son gave me a book of poetry by Andrea Gibson, youngest granddaughter this handmade tile, eldest granddaughter a museum outing, and I got a lovely email from my ex. I feel like the luckiest person in the world.

In Vermont to give a Holocaust lecture this evening, but first: long walk down by Lake Champlain this morning. All part of our world, and this is the space I prefer.

I love how the early redbud leaves are red hearts.

Redbud tree still in bloom, but the leaves—bright red heart shaped—are just coming in. Other trees are in the background; glimpses of bright blue sky. What my granddaughter calls a “shiny day”!

The temperature outside is 78 degrees and today I saw the first forsythia and cherry blossom buds. By tomorrow noon it's supposed be down in the 30s with snow showers...time for a German weather quote!
