La Chevalière d'Éon was born in France, worked in Russia, and wound up in England during her long career as a spy and swordfighter. She was the toast of the Ton during the Regency Era, performing for the Prince of Wales and other dignitaries.

Queer identities were understood differently in past eras, so historians of queer culture often apply current concepts to people in the past, to find role models or examples of queer history. Which brings us to Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.
