The Great Wall of China is no longer in Asia. It's floating over the South Pacific.
You can't see it from shore. But every night, more than 300 industrial vessels switch on their lights just beyond the 200-nautical-mile boundaries of Peru and Chile, forming a wall that stretches for hundreds of kilometers across our horizon.
Using satellite data from Global Fishing Watch, I traced the Chinese squid-jigging fleet operating in international waters off the coasts of Peru and Chile throughout 2025. The result: 262,258 hours of apparent fishing effort targeting jumbo flying squid (pota), packed tight against the edge of our Exclusive Economic Zones - the very resource that thousands of artisanal fishers depend on.
This image alone doesn't prove harm to our fisheries; proving that takes rigorous science. And that's exactly what I'm building: research that connects this fishing pressure with ocean dynamics and the catches landed along the coast.
The ocean has no borders, but it does have witnesses. What we can finally see today, we can protect tomorrow.

To everyone talking about the AI mega-datacentres needing to be required to build/use solar energy, just note that this is only half the problem as the amount of water needed is staggering, solar or no solar. It won’t just raise the power consumption, but also boil away available water.

Not at all. You need to know software in order to fix the Al mistakes. Al has a long way to go before it can replace people. at the same time it allows those people to work far more efficiently.
