I suspect part of the reason so many Americans get defensive when Canada retaliates in the trade war is that they have been repeatedly told that it is Americans who pay the tariffs, not Canadians, which totally ignores the economic impact of reduced exports on Canadian businesses.

Correction.

That cost Canadians nothing.

It meant an extra tax on Americans.

Trump’s tariff campaign has upended North America’s integrated trade relationship and rocked the once-reliable supply chains. According to the Democrats’ Joint Economic Committee, since Trump began using tariffs, the average household in the United States is paying an additional C$1,400 to C$2,400 annually.

The cost of living has also increased for those living north of the border. According to RBC, Canadian households are absorbing an estimated $2,300 to $2,700 in annual costs since tariffs came into effect in early 2025.

Economists are estimating a reduction in Canada’s GDP by 1.5 per cent to two per cent. And since January 2025, Canada has also lost roughly 61,000 manufacturing jobs.

For reference: Northern Ontario is about the size of most of the Midwest and is pretty much entirely forest with 2-3 highways and under 800k people.

That should obviously be very different from attacking a refinery that supplies fuel for the military. While it also supplies civilian fuel, it can still be a lawful target if it makes an effective military contribution, and civilian harm is proportional to destroying that effect, not if it is zero.

Civilians are not targetable because a) not targeting civilians who are not participating in hostilities is a war crime without exception, and b) because one person paying taxes does not make an effective contribution to military action so they cannot be a military objective because of that.

Thanks for sharing! The piece in there on sequence analysis in molecular genetics was written by my grandfather, who also worked with Ulam on the H-bomb. And should you ever find yourself in Lviv, you can still go to a restaurant in the same location as the Scottish Cafe discussed there.

As the US supreme court prepares to rule on whether Donald Trump does have the power to impose tariffs on foreign imports, to address a self-declared economic emergency, the president confirmed in an interview broadcast on Tuesday that he sets tariff rates based, in part, on his own feelings about the leaders of other nations.

Speaking to the Fox host Larry Kudlow, who was the director of the National Economic Council during Trump’s first term, Trump repeated a story he told at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month about why he raised tariffs on imports from Switzerland because the country’s female leader irritated him in a phone call.

“I had an incident with a very nice country, Switzerland,” Trump began. “I put on a 30% tariff, which is very low… and I got an emergency call from, I believe the prime minister of Switzerland.” The president was referring to. call from Switzerland’s president at the time, Karin Keller-Sutter.

“She was very aggressive, but nice, but very aggressive. ‘Sir, we are small country. We can’t do this, we can’t do this, we are a sm-’, I couldn’t get her off the phone,” Trump recalled.

“I said, ‘You may be a small country, but we have a $42 billion deficit with you,’ Trump recalled saying. In fact, the US goods trade deficit with Switzerland was $38.3 billion in 2024; but the US also had a services trade surplus of $29.7 billion with the country the same year.

“‘No, no, we are small country’, again and again and again,” Trump said Keller-Sutter, whose name he never used, told him. “I couldn’t get her off the phone. So it was a 30%, and I didn’t really like the way she talked to us, and so, instead of giving her a reduction, I raised it to 39%.”"

Aside from the discussion of the foreign policy and trade aspects of the speech that are going on, the government's approaches to immigration and higher education in Canada are running counter to these claims of strength, and we need to do better to succeed.
