Last week, I had the opportunity to discuss my new book about free people of color and the Civil War in Boston's African Meeting House. The building was a recruitment site for the famous 54th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War and is now part of the Museum of African American History.

I'll be in the Boston area next week to discuss the experiences of free people of color in the Civil War era. Cambridge Public Library on May 13. Museum of African American History on May 14. Both programs start at 6 pm. Please join us.

I have an interview about the book coming soon on the podcast Ancestor's Footprints with Bernice Alexander Bennett. I will be discussing the book at the Library of Virginia on 6/17. I'm still scheduling events.

Christiana Carteaux Bannister is not a name that most people think of when discussing the Civil War. However, she’s an important actor in my forthcoming book, Out of This Strife Will Come Freedom. She was one of the strongest supporters of the 54th Mass. Inf. during the struggle for equal pay.

In my forthcoming book, Out of This Strife Will Come Freedom, I discuss Baltimore native Thomas Toogood, a free man of color who was a cook on the USS Iroquois. The Iroquois served in the Mediterranean, defending US interests, and in the East Indies, where it chased the rebel raider Shenandoah.

Just submitted the corrected page proofs and indexes for both books about free people of color. Look for Freedom in the Age of Slavery and Out of This Strife Will Come Freedom in print in the Spring.
