The Mermaid Mask has some of the best performances in a game I've played in quite some time. (Review soon).
Physical media (and buying games second hand from friends) still rules.
Took me longer than I liked, but the first homemade BBQ of the year was a success!
Our new exhibit for 75 years of television has 75 televisions showing 75 years of content on Dutch TV. Very impressive to see it synced up to sound and visuals. (Yes I did ask if I could hook up my N64, but they wouldn't let me)
I may be able to post some more extended thoughts over on NERDerland in the coming weeks (perhaps on the launch party too). But for now, I am having a blast. Been playing every evening and it is always disappointing when I have to put it down. They definitely nailed the vibe.
I can't wait to explore this game further and upgrade my ship. I do hope that the photo mode gets some needed features soon. Can't change the time of day, the filter and border options are too limited and I find it strange that pictures aren't immediately saved to system memory. Looks gorgeous tho.
I will say that deploying the template / UI from the modern AC games does make the game feel a bit uneven. Like trying to force a misfitting puzzle piece into place. I get that Ubisoft wants uniformity for this franchise but it is more distracting than not.
I do like that this return to an earlier era of Assassin's Creed shows that not overloading the map with sidequests and icons does wonders for the overall experience. I've been enjoying just tagging along for the main story and doing the occasional optional activity.
I haven't been able to spend enough time with Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag Resynced to do a full review. But as a newcomer to this particular installment it has been a lovingly crafted, and often drop-dead gorgeous, pirate adventure. Edward Kenway is such a fun protagonist.
Here's all you need to know for what they will write on the gravestone
Finally, when exiting the game you are greeted with the famous Davilex Entertainment screen. Each game by Davilex had its own twist (A2 Racer crashes into the letters). But for the EK Voetbalspel '96 you can hear, I presume the developer team, singing the name of the company to the main theme.
Then here is the game itself. Running on the same engine as all future Davilex Competition Manager titles. The commentary is kind of funny even if not that engaging. While I rarely play soccer games, it feels very rough. You can only pass or shoot. Barely able to select which player to control.
But by far my favorite feature in this game is that you can mute Jack van Gelder (a generally wise decision in life) in the options menu. It could've been a simple toggle, but no, they obviously had to visualize this.
So yeah, if this game was marketed with the hit single "Oranje, Ja, Ja, Ja", they obivously needed to include it in the opening. No, I have never heard anyone mention this single. Yes, it is based on a Beatles song. Yes, it is annoyingly catchy.
This game was in-part a hit because it included 'live' commentary by Jack van Gelder, a predominant Dutch sports commentator. He recorded a ton of lines for the game. When you install the game, after the system detects your sound card, you even get the prompt: "Would you like to hear Jack again?".
Given everyone cares about soccer again, I thought it'd be fun to share some clips from The European Soccer Championships '96 videogame. This game was made by Davilex, one of the most dominant game developers from the 90's in the Netherlands. Most known for RedCat, A2 Racer and Competition Manager 🧵
Thanks Star Fox for making me jealous during the first heat wave of the summer.
Can't purchase games hardware in this overpriced market? Well. Have I got a solution for YOu(ya).

By the time I got over my fear for Redeads this thing didn't bother me anymore. I quit playing Ocarina for six months when first entering the Kakariko Graveyard.
Sorry Brabanders, maar de corporate Slop heeft bepaald dat jullie nu uit de provincie Dood-Holland komen🤢
