🧵 New this spring: Wiki-Play Fridays, a monthly pop-up at the WTC Oculus exploring wiki-games and immersive design. Plus three new CUNYpedia Focus Articles — on kallidin, Coney Island Creek, and homelessness in New York — all student-written.

🧵 Edit-a-thons and photo tours hit four CUNY campuses this spring: City Tech, College of Staten Island (first since 2020!), City College Harlem, and LaGuardia CC. In June, Richard Knipel and Wikimedia NYC also ran an edit-a-thon at the UN for UN Open Source Week.

An update on last week’s WikiWednesday Salon - Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈 edition, held at Prime Produce, and packed with great talks on queer data, archival history, AI tools, and more. Here's a recap 🧵, and thanks as always to support from @craignewmark.bsky.social!

The event also served as a live pilot for the new WikiLatinos Learning Platform, led by Oscar Costero. The Black Broward conversations featured Derek T. Davis (Broward County Historic Preservation Board), Emmanuel George, David Paulo, Erin Purdy, WM NYC's Pacita Rudder, and more!

Participants worked on Wikipedia pages covering local figures and institutions: Andrew DeGraffenreidt, Von Delany Mizell, Eula Johnson, The Westside Gazette, and Westview Community Cemetery — alongside broader topics in African-American culture and Afro-Caribbean history.

The event was hosted by Wikimedia NYC, WikiLatinos, AfroCROWD, and Wikimedians of the Caribbean, with AARLCC serving as both venue and knowledge resource, drawing on its special collections to inform the editing work.

🧵 With support from @craignewmark.bsky.social, Wikicurious: Black Broward brought more than 40 ppl together to edit Wikipedia. This hands-on edit-a-thon focused on Black history in Broward County, and was held at the African-American Research Library & Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale.

After the event, we sent everyone home with instructions on uploading their photos to Wikimedia Commons. These Girl Scouts will make real contributions on one of the most-visited websites in the world.

We made a stop at the historic Lefferts House, where curators gave us a tour and walked us through the history of what had once been a 300-acre plantation that relied on the forced labor of enslaved Africans.

Starting near the Lincoln Statue by the Concert Grove Pavilion, we walked through Prospect Park documenting things that belong on Wikimedia Commons — the free image library that illustrates Wikipedia for readers worldwide.

We started with a picnic and a quick intro to @wikipedia.org and Wikimedia Commons. Then we handed the cameras over to the Girl Scouts and went for a walk through Prospect Park to take photos of things that should be accessible to everyone.
