There is a line of strong thunderstorms moving through Powhatan, Amelia, and Nottoway Counties toward the #RVA area. These storms will be in the area in the next 60-90 mins and could become severe. They are already producing TONS of lightning and wind gusts to 50 mph. #vawx

The low pressure area off the western coast of Florida is looking a little suspicious. This seems to be more than just a mesoscale convective vortex, it looks like a closed surface low. Surprised this isn't tagged as an invest. #flwx

The pattern in place is the worst case scenario for the wildfire smoke wafting into the area. A front is currently dropping south toward the mid-Atlantic, and the smoke is following the front into the area and out into the Atlantic, halfway to the Azores. #rva #vawx

You may notice it getting hazy in #RVA during the next few days. An area of high pressure off the coast combined with a frontal boundary well to the north will funnel Canadian wildfire smoke into the area from the northwest, and it will gradually worsen today and tomorrow. #vawx

Gonna be a lot of disappointed storm chasers in Taiwan and Japan as subsurface upwelling during an eyewall replacement cycle has resulted in #Bavi ( #IndayPH) resembling half a tropical cyclone. It has weakened to 90 kts, though it could restrengthen a little once it moves out of the cold pool.

While the Pacific is quite active, typical for El Niño, the Atlantic is completely devoid of tropical activity...also typical for El Niño. Extremely strong westerly shear combined with good old Uncle Sal (SAL, the Saharan Air Layer) have mostly shut the basin down.

Well, that happened fast. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the northern portions of the #RVA metro area (Goochland, Hanover, Henrico) until 10:00pm EDT. The main threat is strong, gusty winds but large hail and frequent lightning are also possible. #vawx

Unfortunately #Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands (including #Rota) aren't going to get much of a break from tropical trouble. Invest #97W over Eastern Micronesia has a high chance of becoming a tropical cyclone this weekend, though it shouldn't be nearly as strong as #Bavi.

By definition #Bavi missed landfall on #Rota by a few miles, but it's close enough. Rota is just south of dead center in Bavi's eye on this visible satellite image.

#Bavi now making landfall on #Rota in the CNMI at an intensity of 155 kts (180 mph). The island is starting to enter the eye now.

I'm not sure what station this is but wunderground is showing a pressure of 948 mb on Rota. #Bavi

Looks like #Bavi will be passing directly over #Rota in the CNMI in the next few hours. Hopefully everyone there and on #Guam is safe and I hope we get some good data.

#Bavi (#09W) seems to have completed an eyewall meld as opposed to a classic eyewall replacement (think Hurricane Melissa), and indications are that it's reintensifying. Extremely dangerous situation unfolding for #Guam and the CNMI.

A cluster of severe thunderstorms in Fluvanna and Buckingham Counties seems to be building its way eastward and its outflow is trying to pop off some thunderstorms closer to the #RVA area. I'd expect business to pick up in the next hour or two. #vawx

An extreme heat warning is in effect for northern and central VA, including the #RVA and DC metro areas, from 10am Thurs to 8pm Fri. Record heat will combine with high humidity to produce heat indices as high as 114° during the day. They may remain over 100° even at night. #vawx
