From a 2022 Tweet by linguist and author @dannybate.com. Taken in Peebles, a town in the Scottish borders. I was as amused by it as he apparently was and saved it. (He also had a monthly podcast, “A Language I Love Is,” although it’s been quiet since March.) I haven’t managed to go see it myself.

Same guys I’m seeing this morning are also talking like these ESPN headlines: “We’re gonna figure out who did this to us!” “_____ really let us down!” Like, before the Paraguay and Oz games, based on the past year, I wasn’t positive they’d get out of the group. It was a fun ride.

Yesterday, we had a “cat tour” in my small Minneapolis neighborhood and it drew more than the prez for his big 250th anniversary rally. The Wedge Cat Tour is an annual walking tour where you can literally meet people’s cats or kittens. It’s quirky and fun, unlike a Trump rally.

Ever since I saw this poster as a kid, I’ve always hoped one day we’d make it work.

It’s always funny/not funny that, given that the inspiration for the holiday was the huge, nationwide strike for the 8-hour workday of 1 May 1886 in the US, that English-speaking countries pointedly avoid observing this day. Have a good holiday, Derek!

Coming back from the East Coast. The snow may have melted in Minnesota but it’s deep in da Yoop, and there’s lots of ice still in the Mackinac Strait and on both the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron sides of the bridge.
