Women in Football applauds the decision of the Brazilian sporting authorities to issue a fine and 12-match ban to Bragantino defender Gustavo Marques for his sexist disparagement of referee Daiane Muniz.

While players have every right to comment respectfully on the performance of officials, it is unacceptable to weaponise their gender, as Marques did, by suggesting women should not referee important matches.

We welcome Marques’ apology and we hope the sanctions serve as a deterrent to sexist abuse. Football is for everyone; women belong in every role; and officials play an indispensable part.

Women in Football fully supports the FA sanction given to Ryan Hamilton, who repeatedly abused his position as manager of Sutton Coldfield Town Women FC. He was in a position of trust. He misused that position in a misogynistic and sexually inappropriate way.

Women should be able to participate in football free from the fear of improper, indecent, abusive and insulting behaviour or words. WIF’s annual workforce survey last year highlighted the prevalence of sexism and misogyny across the football industry. We cannot keep relying on the resilience of women.

We extend our sympathy and solidarity to all the women affected, and we commend them for their courage in reporting Hamilton's behaviour and providing evidence.

WIF invites all football organisations to join us in driving the systemic change needed to ensure that football becomes a place where women can feel safe, welcomed and supported.
