In Bethlehem (Baptist) Chapel, Trefdraeth / Newport (Pembs), there is a Roll of Honour to the men who served in WW1 – 48 names. Although this was a Welsh language chapel, the memorial has English phrasing that’s of its time – ‘the Great War to maintain the sacred ideals of Christian Civilization’

In Tegryn (4.5 km east of Crymych), a WW1 memorial outside Llwyn-yr-Hwrdd chapel commemorating 6 men from the congregations of this & Brynmyrnach chapels who were killed in the war. Another WW1 memorial unveiled in Wales on this weekend a 100 years ago (thus ten years after the Battles of the Somme / Mametz Wood) – Seion chapel, Conwy. (I don't have a photo of this one). Two casualties: L H Roberts died on the Western Front, 1916; J E Griffiths in Beersheba, 1917

Tommy Owen Jones was killed in the Battle of Passchendaele on 20 Sept 1917 and has no known grave. However he is remembered: a memorial created by Ysgol Cwm Rhondda in 2023 was designed in the shape of a rugby ball in his memory (the boys in the group insisted on that) 3/3

Tommy Owen Jones was a champion sprinter and talented rugby player. He was spotted by rugby league scouts while playing for Neath in 1913 and ‘went north’ to play for Oldham. In 1915 Tommy volunteered for the Welsh Regiment and served on the Western Front … 2/3

War memorial at Queens' College Cambridge: among the names here is Bertram Lester Holme who died of wounds aged 27 in April 1916 in Mesopotamia. He is also commemorated on two WW1 memorials in Llangoed, Ynys Mon / Anglesey
