campaign evolved is a strong 7.5 to 8/10. 8 on a good day, but mostly just a 7.5, right around where reach is for me campaign wise. if you like reach or infinite you will likely enjoy CaE. i have very complex thoughts on it, but i still found a way to greatly enjoy it.
- despite this, it is still something i quite enjoy playing and find immense satisfaction in partaking in. its very replayable and despite my nitpicks and criticisms is still enjoyable to just pick up and play, especially in co-op. it's a treat to look at and a visual apology for CEA. -
- the second prequel mission is the worst. i thought the ODST lady was very one note and shallow, which was a damn shame as there was good opportunity to explore her more. a lot of "tell, don't show" with her disdain for spartans, and her lines on that subject felt like they harped on it too much -
- johnson saves this mini campaign for me. hes in his element and a total delight, the banter between him and chief is fun and feels lifted from the written universe of halo. keston john feels more at home here than he did in the original campaign, which is both a blessing and a curse. -
- those prequel missions.... wow are they a mixed bag. the level design is heavily reliant on the player keeping the nav point UI elements visible, making them confusing to navigate otherwise. besides that they aren't anything to write home about, very bog standard "just good" combat arenas. -
- the AI suffers due to halo reach AI sucking shit at everything, but certain behaviors are exacerbated. it feels like catch is on with how many grenades you'll see in an encounter, and that paired with insta-melees from elites make for a whole load of bullshit to deal with in an encounter. -
- tangent over. let's elaborate on what *specifically* feels disjointed and odd. first, those cutscenes are paced so poorly, for the most part. the original pacing felt quick, sharp, and urgent. the remake feels very sluggish and unnatural, lacking an excitement that makes -
- they stuck very close to the original in many respects, and.... didn't in others. i sense that the team's priorities when working on this project were very fuzzy and unclear. level design, spare the library and offending repeated interior cells, seems to stick almost to the letter of what -
so, getting the big thing out of the way. the game looks phenomenal and i'll hear nothing else about it. the devs paid very close attention to the rather limited set of materials available to the bungie team in 2001, and accentuated the shininess and iridescence of certain things, -
