XTREAM project
@xtream-project
EU-funded project (101182278), we aim to unlock the industrial potential of extremophilic organisms to develop sustainable #bioprocesses
Geomicrobiology of Río Tinto: A Terrestrial Mars Analogue We are proud to announce this book, with the participation of XTREAM members Ángeles and Antonio. Their work reflects the expertise, effort, and commitment of the XTREAM team. shre.ink/GieH
Get to know the faces behind #XTREAM on our new website page. acortar.link/K4DNOr They are eXTREAMly nice people. We are part of the Cluster of Aquatic Extremophiles. Subscribe to our newsletter so you don’t miss anything: n9.cl/hs136j AI was used for this post.
Can life flourish in boiling water 🌡 and acid? 🧪 Yellowstone geysers are a well-known natural spot 🏞 However, few know that despite their extreme conditions (high temperatures, dangerous chemistry and constant changes in pressure), some microbes can survive there.
Last week, Dorinde and Antonio, members of the #XTREAM team, attended the final conference co-organised by @blueremediomics.bsky.social and @bluetools-project.eu
Do you feel like going for a swim in these waters? 🏊🏿 You’d rather not! Humans wouldn’t stand its acidic pH, but other species do. 🦠 Meet Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, a true master of extreme life. While most organisms would perish in highly acidic environments, this bacterium calls them home.
Join the final Conference of @bluetools-project.eu, organised together with @blueremediomics.bsky.social 🔬 discover the latest developments 💬 exchange knowledge and ideas 🤝 connect with a wide community More info: acortar.link/hskP8P Don’t miss your chance.‼️ acortar.link/Lqm7KU
What would you give for the clearest skies in the world? 🌌 Few survive at Rub al-Jali desert 🏜, where they have such a privilege. Some microbes 🦠 are among them, resisting inside sand grains, staying inactive for years, or using the water of the air.
This is Blood Falls 🩸Its red colour comes from iron-rich water flowing. Despite the freezing cold 🥶, the high salinity 😵 and the lack of oxygen 😨, more than 17 types of microbes live there!
Tomorrow we’re launching the new edition of the newsletter of the Cluster of Aquatic Extremophiles: #XTREAM, #EXPLORA, #NEXTMARINE, and #XTREMOLIFE Subscribe if you don’t want to miss it! n9.cl/hs136j #SynergyAtTheExtremeQ&A
On May 6, XTREAM coordinator, Antonio García Moyano, joined a breakfast meeting in Bergen, Norway. Throughout the talk, he showed how unique microorganisms 🦠 can inspire sustainable solutions for food 🍽, industry 🏭, and the environment 🏞 #XTREAMProject #Biotechnology #Sustainability
From ultra-clean facilities to outer space, T. phoenicis shows us that survival isn't just about resistance; sometimes it's about endurance through stillness. 💪 👉Read everything about this spacecraft clean room visitor here: doi.org/10.1128/spec...
Exploring places like Lake Baikal helps us to expand our knowledge of life on Earth and beyond. Sometimes, the most resilient life forms are found where we least expect them. 👀
🧬 Meet our partner Prozomix! 🔬 Prozomix specialises in enzyme discovery & engineering, turning biological diversity into high-value biocatalysts for industry. 🌍 Together, we’re pushing biotechnology towards more sustainable solutions #XTREAMteam
New format unlocked 🎙️ You can now listen to XTREAM on the Vive Segovia podcast! Our coordinator, Antonio, together with Irene Sánchez from our sister project EXPLORA, shares how extremophiles will shape the future of biotechnology. Don't miss it!👉 open.spotify.com/episode/2OUJ...
Just back from Hungary! ♨️ Last week, we were sampling at the hot spring of Egerszalók. With water at around 68°C, it’s a unique place where heat, minerals and microbial life come together.
🦠 This archaeon lives without oxygen, and its metabolism consists of using hydrogen to reduce sulphur. You can read what scientists first wrote about this thermophile here👉 doi.org/10.1016/S072... Image obtained from: doi.org/10.3390/life...
XTREAM has returned to the Arctic❄️. This week, we joined the Arctic Microbiology course at UNIS to deliver two training sessions to the students: Lucas Sánchez (@scienseed.com) spoke on scientific communication, and Aurelio Hidalgo (@uam.es) on bioprospecting. We won't forget the experience!
🗣️Today, our coordinator Antonio García Moyano shared with IE University students in Segovia his journey as researcher in Norway. 🤝Together with Irene Sánchez Andrea from EXPLORA, he highlighted how science and extreme life can inspire innovation for sustainability. 📸 @robertoarribas (IG)

🌍❄️ We’re thrilled to welcome University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) to the XTREAM team, one of the northernmost research centres on the planet. 🔬✨ UNIS brings unique Arctic expertise in biology, geophysics, geology, and technology, leading cutting-edge research right in Svalbard’s High Arctic.
🏛️🖼️ @eabrown18.bsky.social led some research through the great art houses of Europe to discover if they had extremophilic mould in their collections. When she asked, everyone answered that they didn’t, but was it true? 🤔👉 shorturl.at/Hl6tH
A fungus known for causing fungal skin infections shows potential beyond its pathogenic role. ✨ Rhinocladiella similis is being studied as a eukaryotic model organism in simulated extraterrestrial settings, like Martian-like conditions. Name a better glow-up!
🗓️ Consortium meeting time! 💫 One year after our kick-off, we’re meeting again in person, this time hosted by @uam.es. We are really happy to share our latest extremophile discoveries, and discuss the next steps together! 🔬
🔬The @csic.es is also part of the XTREAM team! Meet the largest public research institution in Spain and one of the most prestigious in Europe. The Centre of Astrobiology is an institution within CSIC that works to learn more about extremophiles. Learn more about them 👉https://www.csic.es/es
🚨 Breaking news! We welcome @uaveiro.bsky.social (UA) as a new partner in XTREAM! Bem-vindos à equipa!🎉 At UA, CICECO develops sustainable methods to recover high-value compounds from extremophiles, using computational tools and lab work to move biomolecules toward industrial use.🌱🛠️
🚫💦If I tell you: waterless place, I am sure you will think about a place like this: a desert. Specifically, we are talking about the Gobi Desert. 🌏This desert occupies the third part of Mongolia and is one of the most important desert areas in the world due to its intact landforms and features.
New #XTREAMteam! Meet Wageningen University, a pioneer in innovation for sustainable change. Its mission is to explore nature's potential to improve quality of life, combining cutting-edge research and education in life sciences, human well-being, biodiversity and climate.👉 www.wur.nl/en.htm
🍉❄️Sometimes snow is not white. The appearance of red-tinted snowpacks, also known as “watermelon snow”, is the result of algae communities creating a unique scenario around seasonal changes.
Up for a swim? ⚠️Not possible at Poás Lake, except for extremophiles!
