Simple Minds - Empires and Dance (1980) Genres: Post-Punk, New Wave, Art Rock, Coldwave In my 20s this album blew my brain into a million pieces. This is the "Alive & Kicking" band? The "Don't You (Forget About Me)" band? Their run from '79 to '84 is unmatched in new wave/art rock/post-punk etc.

New Musik - From A to B (1980) Genres: New Wave, Synthpop, Art Pop Wildly catchy new wave-y synthpop songs, with just enough live band elements to keep things organic. "Sanctuary" is such a major jam. Some jangly art-pop elements that works as a nice counterpoint to the synthpop too.

Gentle Giant - Interview (1976) Genres: Progressive Rock, Avant-Prog, Zolo Coming to this after The Missing Piece was interesting since it is more out-there left-field, while still maintaining the more mainstream approach they'd lean further into. Probably my fav of their discography.

The '89 Cubs - There Are Giants in the Earth (2004) Genres: Indie Rock, Post-Hardcore A forgotten Saddle Creek indie super-group of sorts; firmly rooted in the punk and indie-rock genres injected with tempo switch-ups, textural freak-outs and jittery outbursts. Such a cool record.

Cortex - Troupeau bleu (1975) Genres: Jazz-Funk, Jazz Pop, Samba-jazz Rightly heralded by online circles and crate diggers since "Huit octobre 1971" was used by MF DOOM. You could basically just read the list of credits and go "amazing [instrument/vocal] work by [name]" and be right every time.

Dark Angel - Time Does Not Heal (1991) Genres: Thrash Metal Originally released with a sticker that said "9 songs, 67 minutes, 246 riffs!". This is a "NO EXIT" road for technical thrash pushing riff density as far as it can go, and a galaxy brain moment for me regarding my love for tech thrash.

Yes - Drama (1980) Genre: Progressive Rock For some reason I love when classically prog bands turn synth-forward, see also: RUSH. Propulsive bombastic cocaine 80s new wave texture applied to spectacle-pushing, unable-to-sit-still progressive and symphonic rock. Hell yeah.

Jean-Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger (1978) Genres: Jazz Fusion, Progressive Rock, Space Rock Have gotten addicted to Ponty the past year or two. Jazz fusion with a proggy feel (in vibe more than track lengths) plus a good dose of synths and a generally nerdy air. Under 40 and minutes it jams hard.

Propagandhi - Today’s Empires, Tomorrow’s Ashes (2001) Genres: Melodic Hardcore, Hardcore Punk I love Propagandhi so much that any of their albums could be included here, to be honest. This one just straddles where they came from (snotty punk) and where they'd go (thrash) nicely.
