My niece is in the Vermont National Guard. This is so heartbreaking. Especially since most who join the NG do so because they want to help their community during a crisis.

BLACK BEAN & CHOCOLATE CHILI

Using chocolate in dishes other than desserts may seem odd, but it is not so unusual in countries where cocoa beans are grown. Chocolate's deep flavor provides an ambience in which other tastes can flourish. This chili is rich and unusual. We suggest serving it in smaller portions as a side dish or as part of a buffet.

2 TABLESPOONS VEGETABLE OIL

SERVES 6 TO 8

1/2 CUPS CHOPPED ONIONS

4 GARLIC CLOVES, MINCED OR PRESSED

TOTAL TIME: 50 MINUTES

1 CELERY STALK, THINLY SLICED

1 SMALL FRESH CHILE, MINCED

1 TABLESPOON GROUND CUMIN

2 TEASPOONS DRIED OREGANO

1/2 TEASPOON GROUND CINNAMON PINCH OF GROUND CLOVES

-1 TEASPOON GROUND CORIANDER

1/2 TEASPOON GROUND BLACK PEPPER

1/2 TEASPOON SALT

11/2 CUPS CHOPPED BELL PEPPERS

3 CUPS COOKED OR CANNED BLACK BEANS (TWO 15.5-OUNCE CANS, RINSED AND DRAINED)

2 CUPS UNDRAINED CRUSHED CANNED TOMATOES (14.5-OUNCE CAN)

1 TABLESPOON FRESH LEMON JUICE

1 TABLESPOON SOY SAUCE

11/2 OUNCES SEMI-SWEET CHOCOLATE, BROKEN INTO SMALL PIECES (ABOUT 1/4 CUP)

CHOPPED SCALLIONS

In a saucepan, warm the oil on medium heat. Add the onions and garlic and sauté until the onions become translucent, about 10 minutes. Add the celery and chile, cover, and cook for about 5 minutes.

Reduce the heat and stir in the cumin, oregano, cinnamon, cloves, corian-der, black pepper, salt, and the bell peppers. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, until the bell peppers begin to soften. Stir occasionally to keep the spices from burning. If needed, add a little juice from the canned tomatoes.

Add the black beans, tomatoes, lemon juice, and soy sauce. Bring the chili to a simmer, cover, and cook for 5 to 10 minutes. Stir in the chocolate. When it has melted, adjust the salt, black pepper, and lemon juice to taste.

Garnish with chopped scallions.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) supported gun control when the black panthers were the ones holding guns (lawfully). When the BPP visited the State Capitol in 1967, Chairman Bobby Seale read a statement. The NRA quickly passed gun control legislation, the Mulford Act.

In a humane world, Brian Kilmeade would be fired and never work again for advocating murder on national T.V. Meanwhile people are being fired and banned from social media just for saying that Charlie Kirk promoted hateful, bigoted ideology and incited harrassment and violence.

It’s the people who matter. It’s the people we want to protect from fascist goon squads. Anyone targeted deserves our unconditional protection and support. If you are equivocating about that core requirement regarding people of any identity, you are not fighting fascism.

And then there are the Epstein files.

A YouGov poll from Tuesday showed that 79% of Americans think the government should release all the documents it has about the Epstein case while only 4% think it should not. Those numbers included 85% of Democrats, but also 76% of Independents and 75% of Republicans. And that was BEFORE the publication of the Wall Street Journal article detailing the lewd and suggestive birthday letter Trump apparently contributed to Epstein's fiftieth birthday album.

We need to start NOW making Dem politicians understand that there are some policy compromises we can make to all come together to defeat fascism, but sacrificing the safety and rights of ANY vulnerable group of people is not on the table. I will not support anyone who equivocates on trans rights.

There is a campaign to erase trans people by passing legislation to deny them gender affirming healthcare, criminalize including their stories in educational settings, and banish them from participating in society. I will fight this with all my heart.
