There are at least 10 species of Dwarf Lemurs, and ALL Dwarf Lemurs have the unique trait of being the only primates that truly hibernate!

At least 1 species of Dwarf Lemur is even known to hibernate in burrows it digs underground, making it also the ONLY known Fossorial (digging/underground-dwelling) primate!!

Thanks to their hibernation, these tiny Lemurs are able to live as long as their larger cousins (upwards of 30+ years!) Now, scientists wonder if they can unlock hibernation in humans by studying Dwarf Lemur genomes.

The Indri (Indri Indri), known locally as Babakoto ("after of man"), is the largest living species of Lemur, at around 3ft/1m in length.

It is the only living Lemur without a tail, instead only having a small white or black nub, similar to a bobcat!

They are one of the few animals we know of that has a natural sense of musical harmony, and will synchronize their haunting, whale-like calls with one-another every morning in a beautiful jungle chorus.

They're also one of the only Lemurs (or primates in general) that naturally has green or sometimes even blue eyes!

Pale Fork-Marked Lemur (Phaner pallescens), named after the dark, split or "forked" markings on their faces!

One of 4 species of Fork-Marked Lemurs, very little is known about these a animals, as they have never truly been studied in the wild.

All Lemurs have toothcombs, which are thin, toothpick-like teeth on the bottom jaw that allow them to brush/groom their fur. The toothcombs of Fork-Marked Lemurs are extra long and thick, and allow them to stab through tough bark to feed on the gum and sap of trees!

Crowned Lemurs (Eulemur coronatus) are one of 12 species of "True Lemurs", which are defined by their sexually dichromatic fur colorations!

While males and females are the same size and shape (unlike many sexually dimorphic animals, where one sex may be larger or shaped differently), True Lemurs are more like many birds where the difference is ONLY in the colors!

For Crowned Lemurs, the females are silvery-grey with a gold "tiara" while males are rusty brown and orange with a black "crown". Both species have soft white faces and delicate snouts with a black-tipped nose.

These are some of the smallest diurnal Lemurs & the smallest of the True Lemurs (Eulemur genus), weighing only around 2-3lbs (1.1-1.4kg)!

Gonna also mention for posterity that: Many animals you think of as "The _____ Animal" are actually MANY SPECIES!! For example, there are: • 14 species of Tree Kangaroo • 29 species of Pika • 5 species of Vizcacha • 31 species of Tenrec • ~16 species of Civet • 136+ species of American Opossums!!

MADAGASCAR HAS SOME RAD REPTILES!!! • Leaf-Tailed Geckos: Available in leaf, bark, & moss flavors! • Madagascar Giant Hognose: If you like hognoses, did u know they also come in BIG?? • Leaf Chameleons: These are the smallest chameleons on Earth!! • Day Geckos: Geico gecko & maker of yoshi MLEMs

Satanic Leaf-Tailed Geckos (Uroplatus phantasticus)! While they are usually quite full or grey in color, some individuals can have patches of more vibrant coloration, leading to their "fantastic" scienctific name.

Their common name, "Satanic", comes from the pointy eyebrow ridges on their top eyelids, giving them an angry, evil, or "horned" appearance.

Like all species of Leaf-Tailed Geckos, their bodies are covered in extra bits of skin that look like the texture of leaves/plants!

NOT PICTURED: There are over 20 species of Uroplatus gecko, including some that look exactly like moss on a tree, bark on a branch, etc.!

Malagasy Giant Hognose Snake (Leioheterodon madagascariensis) looking toward the viewer. These large black and white checkered snakes are in a separate family of Elapid snakes that are unrelated to other "Hognose" snakes! While it is unknown if these animals possess true venom or not, they at least produce a "paralyzing saliva" that can subdue smaller prey animals such as lizards or Mouse Lemurs, but does little more than irritate the skin of humans, making them overall completely harmless to people (especially in addition to their generally docile demeanor!)

A fully-grown adult Pygmy Leaf Chameleon (Brookesia micra) standing on a human fingertip, which was considered the smallest reptile on Earth until the discovery of the Nano Chameleon (Brookesia nana) in 2021!

With around 32 known species, the Brookesia chameleons on Madagascar are overall considered to be the smallest reptiles in the world.

One of over 50 species of Day Geckos, this highly-decorated species from Madagascar has also been accidentally introduced to Hawaii!

• Tuatara: This is NOT A LIZARD!!! They're the only living member of an ancient lineage of reptiles!! Have 2 rows of upper teeth, a "third eye" on top of their head to detect light, & can live to be over 110!!! Endemic to New Zealand, they give them beads on their scales to ID individuals!!

YEAAAAH, MY FAV TYPE OF THREAD!! Starting with birds: • Heart-spotted Woodpecker: Have special feathers on their butts that smell sweet?!? • Wallcreeper: Butterfly-like wings they flash to communicate! • Motmots: There are many species!! Some "tick" their tails like a clock to deter predators!

A Wallcreeper bird (Tichodroma muraria) perched on a rock face. These small grey birds live exclusively in rocky cliffs/chasms, which would echo birdsongs, so they instead flash and flick their brilliantly-colored red, black & white wings as a means of communication. While at rest, their wings reveal some of that bright spotted coloration, making them look more like a resting butterfly or moth than like a bird!

A Trinidad and Tobago Motmot (Momotus bahamensis), one of at least 14 species of Motmot. The bird is perched on a branch and looking away from the viewer, with its soft green and blue gradient back and wing feathers clearly viaible. On it's head is a brilliant blue, teal, indigo, and black mask and crown framing its neon red eyes. Its neck and belly are orange, and its tail has a large bare area, ending in two blue raindrop-shaped feather tips.

A Broad-Billed Motmot (Electron platyrhynchum), another of at least 14 known species of Motmots!

This one has a vibrant orange head with a black "mask", black bill, and small neon-cyan "beard". It's collar is green and lower body is a similar bright cyan. The underside of its tail is grey, with a heart-shaped pendulum of feathers at its tail tip.

Amazing how their wings almost look more like a butterfly or moth than a bird (which I'm sure has an evolutionary advantage, as well, but we perhaps just don't know it yet!) They're a unique bird, all alone in their own distinct taxonomic Family: Tichodromidae! (Most closely related to nuthatches)

If you see CBLs at a zoo (even reputable zoos), FYI there actually are ZERO true Common Brown Lemurs in captivity in the USA! Every single individual came from an old hybrid population!! So THESE are all hybrids (usually with Red-Fronted or Red-Brown Lemurs)!! But they look a lot like him, too!! 0:

You most likely saw photos of Red-Brown Lemurs (Eulemur rufus), which is the main image for "Common Brown Lemur" on Wikipedia 😭 But I think that species is what your OC looks the most like!! The challenge being, tho, that they look different if they're male or female! 1+2 are male, 3+4 are fem!

Well just be careful, bc most Common Brown Lemurs DON'T have ANY facial markings at all!! Photos of Eulemurs are VERY commonly mislabeled, bc people see "brownish Lemur? = Common Brown"! (CBLs are actually endangered now, sadly) THESE are all Common Brown Lemur (males & females look identical)!
