🪎 In a somewhat surprise turn up for the books I’m going to be down Portobello Market tomorrow morning (Saturday 1 August) selling my late grandmother’s stash of vintage costume jewellery (and I should mention she was a child of diamond traders)—if anyone is in West London tomorrow, come and say hi!

Just went on the best rabbit hole journey where a random post here led me to @waub.bsky.social’s work which led me to Amazon and his feed which reminded me that Banksy was supposedly identified which led me to this BBC piece which suggests he might be, wait for it, Art Attack’s Neil Buchanan

Made my first home made birthday cake for my kid today and frankly quite impressed with myself, happy birthday to him, happy pushing out day/birth trauma reminder day to me

This week we’ve discovered we have not one but two bumblebee nests under the floor of our kind of garden lean-to. One is about 2 feet away from our recycling so the bees have been using recycled paperwork for their nests, and I think it’s rather sweet

Someone’s turned Kristie Dotson’s work on epistemic exclusion into a quantifiable scale for Faculty Epistemic Exclusion 🤯

In the present study, we describe the development and initial validation of the Faculty Epistemic Exclusion Scale, a scale designed to measure experiences of epistemic exclusion in higher education. We developed and evaluated the scale by (a) drawing upon the theoretical and empirical literature in higher education and related fields to refine our definition of epistemic exclusion and develop an initial pool of items, (b) submitting the initial items to expert review and cognitive pretesting, and (c) pilot testing the items on a sample of 604 faculty primarily drawn from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. During the scale evaluation process, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed two reliable scales of epistemic exclusion, each with two subscales: formal exclusion (criteria exclusion and application exclusion) and informal exclusion (legitimacy exclusion and comprehension exclusion). The scale’s convergent and divergent validity was supported by its correlation with other scales assessing workplace mistreatment and personality traits. There was also variability in epistemic exclusion across race–gender groups. Implications of the Faculty Epistemic Exclusion Scale for future research and policy in higher education are discussed.

Vegan Sweet Potato Brownies.
Ingredients:
1 large sweet potato
1/2 cup almond flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup melted coconut oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
Optional: vegan chocolate chips, chopped nuts Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a baking dish with parchment paper.
Peel and chop the sweet potato into small pieces, then steam or boil until soft.
Mash the sweet potato in a bowl until smooth.
Add the almond flour, cocoa powder, maple syrup, melted coconut oil, vanilla extract, baking powder, and salt to the bowl with the sweet potato. Mix well until smooth.
Fold in the chocolate chips or chopped nuts, if using.
Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and smooth out the top with a spatula.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool
For 10 mins.
