How I wish that Polish history books got an English translation. Below is me, paraphrasing a story I'd found in *Chłopki* by Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak.

There's a rural teacher in Greater Poland, writing in 1928, who reports that, when asked about what they would like to do in the future, one girl in his class wrote "I would like to be a cow so I could graze in the fields and give everyone milk", and he, full well familiar with conditions she and other girls in the village face, comments by saying "This, indeed, would be better for her. At least she would be treated as a piece of property, and if damage is incurred to a piece of property, that's a cause for concern and worry."

Not sure if you know but one of the synagogues had its roof and ceiling painstakingly restored within the POLIN Museum (with the help of the book that started this thread!). Having seen it in person, honestly the picture doesn't do it justice, it's magnificent.
