Calambokidis said the fin whale was “moderately decomposed” at the time of the necropsy, "partly because that occurs pretty rapidly, and also it was struck and dragged by the ship for a while.” The Evergreen ship was coming from China and may have struck the whale near the Aleutian Islands in Alaska or along the North Pacific coast in the latter half of its transit, he said. “Fin whales, because of their kind of long, lean length, seem particularly prone to getting hung up on the bow of these new ship designs that have that bulbous bow,” Calambokidis said. “It’s very typical that the ship is unaware that it’s hit a whale. All these ships are so large.” Calambokidis said the whale could also been struck at night. Recent research published by his team showed fin whales, in addition to blue whales and humpback whales, spend most of their time at the surface at night. During the day those whales spend over half of their time in deep waters where they aren’t vulnerable to ship strikes, he said. “We estimated in that study that whales were twice as likely to be hit at night than in the day,” Calambokidis said. “That perspective tells you there’s little they could have done to have seen this whale.”
