Today I tried perler beads crafting for the first time with my friend, it became a viral sensation in China in the past couple of years almost out of nowhere I used to do water painting lessons with this friend every other weekend so it feels nostalgic to do crafts with her
Had a very busy day at/around ChinaJoy – had a few meeting near the venue, did a quick walkthrough inside the business area and talked to some devs, showed some friends around Nanjing Rd/the Bund area, then travelled across the city to a big indie game showcase featuring nearly 100 games
Speaking of changing lives – last weekend I had the pleasure to be one of the judges for a game dev contest for Chinese university students. Of the 20 nominated games that presented at the competition at least half were presented by women and a few nominated games were made by women-only teams.
I’m pleasantly surprised by the crowd’s enthusiasm, I was low-key worried that Sunny Day would not get the warm welcome they deserve due to them being a 90s legacy band, but the folks in London understood the mission, and I’m just really happy that the band knows that we love them loud and clear
Bluesky doesn’t work well for multiple videos so I’ll just share a clip of 48, one of my favorites on Diary since my rediscovery It’s very strange and surreal to see these guys close up in the flesh, especially Jeremy, whose mannerisms I’m so familiar with from countless hours of digital contact.
"Sexual Content“ tag is also censored, although games with this tag are still viewable and purchasable. Not sure if this is new or always been like this though
The Scroll of Taiwu was a game changer indeed, anecdotally it was also the first Chinese indie game that I heard my friends talking about The 1.0 launch got a regional Steam front page takeover today
Always a pleasure to be in Florence! After being here 3 times I can finally say that I know the city semi-well
Almost choked at this, this was my exact thought when I saw the sculpture in person today
This Korean paper asmr artist that I’ve been following for a while made a TikTok of her healing Van Gogh 🥹 Her account name is paper pepper www.tiktok.com/@paper__pepp...
At INDIGO! Had the pleasure to do a live Steam page review earlier today, ‘twas fun
This just popped up on my timeline, I knew I was on to something Happy 1st belated Joanna Newsom day!
“Hideo Kojima collaborates with luxury brand mentioned in millennial Hollywood film franchise”
Also this was my first time in Berlin and the experience was unreal, can't believe all the myths about Berlin are true? This city has so many layers and so many things going on everywhere all the time, I felt deeply humbled but somehow also very relaxed and free. Needless to say I will be back
I won't shut up about this for a while but just wanted to reiterate that I loved A Maze! It's been long since I had this much fun from games and games events, this energy is much needed after having a few stressful months in a row I left with so much inspiration and new connections, very grateful 🫶
A Maze day 2: went to a series of inspiring talks by @farfama.bsky.social, @qdork.bsky.social, Iván McGill of Shaman Garage, Joanna Lyu of rect repair (collective from Shanghai) and watched the iconic Hyper Talks featuring @tanatb.housefuckinggame.com’s houses on pole My attention span is fine 👍
Falafel Al Amin around the corner is amazing! maps.app.goo.gl/Je9uM646nMXy...
I made my way to A Maze!! Please say hi if you see me around, also my first time in Berlin so taking in the vibes as well (Worth noting that this trip is not work related 😂)
Good news: one of the lawyers providing legal support to fanfic writers facing arrest shared that quite a few writers’ charges have been dropped (not sure if this is the correct legal term) recently. She posted this following update on Weibo
Second stop: first edition of Indie in de Bunker, held at Vondelbunker, an underground cultural venue. Very different vibes but also good games and good crowd! Games events are absolutely popping off in AMS these days (+ @untitledgamesevent.bsky.social) a lot to be excited for in the future
Had a fully packed event-ful day in Amsterdam! First stop: the long awaited @indieshowcasenl.bsky.social, showing a diverse line-up of local/European indie games + a special Rusty Lake exhibition which attracted a lot of my fellow Chinese players. I hope the next edition comes back sooner!
In the Crowns of History DLC, players can play as Tai Taizong, along with Cleopatra and Xerxes. The team's attention to detail has been super impressive!
Super happy for The King Is Watching team for the great DLC launch + free update + merch drop! I was honored to pick some authentic Chinese memes to become random events in the new update, the devs did such a great job translating them to the game's style steamcommunity.com/games/275390...
Also for me this was a great opportunity to learn a bit more about the real USA although many people told me that SF is absolutely not representative of the country 😂 Honestly the city is special and impressive in many ways, I wish I had more time to explore but I'm sure I will be back!
I'm home from my first GDC! While I’ve been to quite a few events in Europe and China, GDC still stands out to me as the one with the strongest sense of community, and industry folks there are really open to sharing ideas in depth and with transparency. I had so many unexpectedly deep convos
Leaving San Francisco tomorrow! Some new thoughts of today: Everything here looks 4K ultra HD Food portions are indeed massive, also a lot of dishes here have 0 vegetables, not even a single piece of lettuce I don't understand why essential products like toothpastes are behind bars in Target??
This one is probably the best, if you look at it from a certain angle and squint hard enough you'll see the people doing fishy business on the right 💀
On a very small vacation in Vienna before my next gig starts, I checked out Albertina Museum but unfortunately all the iconic Durer works that I came to see are not on display (very important lesson to learn 😭). That being said the current exhibition also has some funny medieval etchings
Personal update: today is my last day at tinyBuild. The past 3.5 years have been amazing. I learned so much and met so many great people, many of whom became close friends. I feel incredibly lucky to have worked on iconic, award-winning games with my talented colleagues. Thanks for everything 💙
