This is them! The 1972 edition of the New Standard Encyclopedia. (Thank you, internet, for providing photos for me to get nostalgic over!)

The spines of 14 volume set of the New Standard Encyclopedia, arranged from left to right in alphabetical order. The covers are off-white. The letter labels at the top of the spine are gold sans serif capital block letters against dark red. The numerical label are smaller gold numerals similarly against a dark red near the bottom of the spines. Along the spines in gold lettering on the creamy hardcover is NEW STANDARD ENCYCLOPEDIA.

We also had this Webster’s deluxe edition unabridged dictionary, which I also loved. It also had some great color maps and illustration plates. My mom tells me I won this in a spelling bee, but somehow I don’t remember that part of its backstory! (Not my actual copy/photo.)

Post title: Why do wine experts have to be Somalian?

Post text: I asked this on r/NoStupidQuestions earlier, but they took my post down, and a user commented that I'd be better off asking here. I recently saw that a high-end restaurant near me was looking for a wine expert. As a lover of all things wine looking for a new job, I thought I'd drop off a resume. The general manager comes out of the back, and the first questions she asks me is if I am Somalian. I am not, so I answered honestly. She told me that they are only looking for Somalians with 5 years or more of experience. Isn't that a bit discriminatory? Why do I need to be Somalian to work at a restaurant as a wine expert?

Such fun when all of your failsafes, uh, fail. 🔐 Installed a deadbolt with a keypad years ago so I wouldn’t get locked out of my house. Keypad malfunctioned today. Keychain with backup keys left inside. Spare key in my car… not in my car. Spares at my mom’s house and sister’s were not correct. 😩

Like, a dozen spare house keys on a red carabiner keychain. None of them were the correct key that was needed.

VICTORY! I have consumed some street food in Manila, getting mango and avocado sorbetes from a pushcart in Intramuros. h/t to @sstan99.bsky.social for putting me into the "dirty ice cream" path 😂
