TAKE ACTION: Your help is needed to protect prairie dogs, beavers, lesser prairie-chickens, and other wildlife on the Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands in Kansas and Colorado.

Good news: The discussion draft of the Senate Farm Bill does not include the Save Our Bacon Act (H.R. 4673), which seeks to nullify state laws such as California’s Prop 12 that protect farmed animals from certain cruel confinement practices, including veal and gestation crates.

TAKE ACTION: A new report from the Government Accountability Office recommended that legislative updates be made to alleviate the suffering of the hundreds of millions of animals who endure long, grueling trips across the US each year.

AWI is horrified by the recent news of a teenager’s death after being thrown from a horse-drawn carriage in Central Park. The horse was pulling a family of four when he spooked and bolted away from his driver, who had exited the carriage to take their photo.

For many older adults, pets serve as a source of deep emotional connection and companionship. However, this bond is sometimes exploited by abusers—including family members or caregivers—to exert power or control.

TAKE ACTION: A more humane future for America’s horses is on the horizon—and we need you to voice your support. The US House of Representatives is considering a transportation package that includes language that would bar the transport of horses to slaughter for human consumption.

TAKE ACTION: AWI is deeply disappointed by the Trump administration’s recent decision to lift a ban on the use of cyanide “bombs,” or M-44 devices, across 245 million acres of BLM-managed lands.

Last Friday, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Rep. Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ) re-introduced the Extinction Prevention Act, which would fund conservation efforts supporting some of the country’s most imperiled native species, including butterflies, freshwater mussels, and southwest desert fish.

The seafood industry has immense impacts on oceans and the animals who inhabit them—and too often, these impacts are catastrophic for the species involved. That’s why AWI has long attended the world’s largest seafood industry trade shows to advocate for these animals.

It’s #EndangeredSpeciesDay! In the 1960s, AWI was one of the few organizations advocating for endangered species protections, which led, in part, to the signing of the Endangered Species Act (ESA)—the world’s strongest conservation law—in December 1973.
